I also blame the US education system. A better education of history without the whitewashing would help prevent a lot of this.

I noticed something recently: there are a lot of people in professional positions who are extremely short-sighted. They think these institutions will be around forever, but they won't be if we keep letting the right constantly try to undermine them.
