Well, in Japan, they are often planted around graves and considered connected to Buddhist stories of the flowers that lead the path to reincarnation.
In anime, they appear often as shorthand for approaching death. Another OP that uses it is Tokyo Ghoul, turning Rize’s kakune into spider lilies.
