Let me introduce myself. I'm a professor @usask.bsky.social at the University of Saskatchewan. My group works on invasive wild pigs, caribou, wolves, and other beasties. I take the responsibility of my academic freedom very seriously and use it and good science to hopefully have some influence.

So sad. Love that guy.
James Van Der Beek, who has been battling cancer, has died.

He was 48.

Per TMZ.

See that's the first mistake most make. If you never make an actual list then you can't possibly ever fall behind.

I had a prof, the great Rick Riewe that climbed on at table and demonstrated walrus mating behaviour every year.

On International Day of Women and Girls in Science I am so lucky to get to work with amazing Women+Girls in science from the elders that show us the way, to youth out on the tundra, to all my undergrad classes and arctic field course, to grad students in my lab and beyond, everyone just crushing it.

Spring has sprung,
The grass has ris’
I wonder where the birdies is.

I'm working furiously on finalizing plans for this!

This one hit me like a freight train today.

How is your profile name not Sphagnum P.I.?

Super cool. At first I thought it was burned by fire.

My favourite quote from one of my mentors Dr. Norm Kenkel: "don't give reviewers sticks they can use to beat you with".

I've repeated that one at least a thousand times by now!

Well you have a standing invite to visit me on the sixth floor any time you are around!

Yes! From that guy it is 28 steps and four floors to my office.

oh no. They are great tools- when they work correctly!

The Contrarian

yes it is a nice relaxing spot..warm and smells like coffee. Definitely in Saskatchewan.

Wow that's super cool. We captured dozens of moose with a net gun from helicopter and never had any issues releasing them. We also did a one time spring calf count for all of the collared females which meant pushing them out of cover to count the babies--zero issues.

Like most things, I only learn from my moosetakes.

Pro tip: keep your ‘to do’ lists short and manageable.

Where am I?

Habitat loss in Canada’s grasslands has threatened many species.
That includes the American badger, which Fisher described as “one of the most important, central and iconic species that remains of the North American grassland ecosystem.”

Yikes. That will get your heart rate up!

The best option to avoid a moose confrontation is to remember you are ALWAYS in moose country and keeping aware. Have a quick scan of the area before proceeding outside.

If you encounter a moose close up DO NOT start taking photos or try to get closer. Remain calm and back away. Get to shelter.

Moose are generally calm and just ignore us, but..

Obvious signs of a pissed off moose:

-ears back
-head low
-hair on neck up
-smacking lips
-snorting or grunting
-stomping feet

or..there may be little to no sign before a moose charges.

I did an interview today about an aggressive moose in Saskatchewan that caused some significant concern. There is no place in this province that I would be surprised to see a moose at this point, including my neighborhood in Saskatoon. 1/3

It is Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week here in Saskatchewan. I would start with thanking some teachers that fundamentally changed my life. So many great ones.
