PINNED INTRO POST: Hi, I'm Zander; I've been making comic books since 1993. My best known solo books are Heck, The Replacement God, and Kaijumax, and I've done art duties on such works as Top 10 and Smax. I've also done a great deal of educational graphic novels and layout assists for DC comics!
Why did you use an AI reproduction instead of the real comic strip?

That's awful, Jerry. You deserve better.

It's always some variation of limiting their liability and responsibility. I just think it's got to be whittling down the labor pool to have every single freelancer have this on their plate twice a year. And I do so little work for DC that it's almost not worth the hassle.

I just finished and saw that. Wild

I knew we could track it back to them!

1099s of a certain type, outgoing invoices, couple other things.

Until they tell you that it's not the right kind. And they want 2 pages of your schedule C, and they need evidence that you're doing promotion for your freelance business. Every six months!
February 9, 2026 at 5:54 PM
For the people asking: my understanding is that a law was passed in CA that requires companies to give freelancers that are exclusive health insurance. That's fine, but now apparently it's on the *freelancers* to prove they have other clients. And you have to do it every year.
Just in case anyone from DC is wondering: your People 2.0 requirement makes me never ever ever want to do work for you. Just in case you're wondering! Just in case!

NEW: The Trump admin certainly put on a show last week about changing tactics in Minnesota after ICE agents killed Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old VA nurse.

Trump even suggested it's time for "a softer touch."

Except residents say nothing has changed. At all. www.huffpost.com/entry/ice-mi...
Trump Using A ‘Softer Touch’ With ICE In Minnesota? Residents Say Don’t Be Fooled.
Two weeks after Alex Pretti’s killing, federal agents have shown no signs of backing down. The resistance definitely hasn't.

This is absolutely true. They're moving around the suburbs so each place is caught a little off guard. NOTHING HAS CHANGED.
A desperate plea sent to me by a Minneapolis resident who's been on the front lines since the beginning of the ICE occupation:

I think this is why we are so hurt when great artists turn out to be horrendous abusers. There is so much of them in the work that we can't extract the quality from the humanity.

(And why we can't enjoy AI imagery-- that son of a bitch has been drying up all the lakes!)
Most cartoonists aren't Rembrandt, but they become the voices of generations bc they are able to pinpoint, with painful accuracy, something no one else had the words to say. That's where the quality of their art comes from. A great artist is a great observer. The skillset is secondary.

Protesting this afternoon at the Whipple Building. Best part was hearing my sweet-as-pie wife screaming "BOOTLICKERS!!" at the top of her lungs.
February 6, 2026 at 9:22 PM
The blame is mine-- the story got a lot longer!

Most of this is right, but Sleep #8 will be out on March 4th! (because it turned out to be 40 pages!) (but still $3.99!)
Repost w tags! My variant cover for SLEEP #8 by Zander Cannon @zandercannon.bsky.social out February 18! So proud to work with him again.

Here is a thing:

There were several years when I was one of VERY few journalists seriously covering harassment and abuse issues in comics (and by extension sometimes video games). During that time, I became the Person People Told Things To.

Abolish ICE.

There’s no reforming it.

There’s no compromise.

There’s only one way to rein in ICE’s terror campaign. Abolish it.
