This is me and my uncle Dave in 1988. He died five years later from AIDS. As of this morning, the book I’m writing about him is now under contract with University of Washington Press.
Had a blast joining @hopeteague.com and Annie on the “Interchangeable White Ladies” podcast to talk about breezy issues like nationalism, geographic heritage, and DNA tests.

From our childhood sports broadcasts to the skies above Tacoma - it’s the Goodyear Blimp!

(Is it hanging out near the Puyallup Fair or did it get lost on the way to Lumen Field?)

What I’m reading on vacation this week. The first two by writers I already love, and the third by one I’m reading for the first time.

The number one reason I’m thankful my book found a publisher is that now when I email strangers for interviews or information (and subtly mention the publisher) they usually write back.

My latest piece in Pacific NW Magazine. Will probably be my last one of 2025 because I need all the spare time I can find to get my book into my publisher on time by December. Glad to finish up this run with an article about a community-critical place in Pierce County.

I went out to Spanaway and rode an ice bumper car reporting this Seattle Times article. Just the latest example of the high-speed, high-risk ends I’ll go to for a scoop.

Ice bumper cars at Sprinker Recreation Center are part of a trio of popular winter attractions in Spanaway, along with ice skating and a holiday lights exhibit.

My Christmas gift (to myself) arrived!!

Now I gotta wrap these up so my kids can watch me slowly unwrap them Xmas morning because it’s important they know Xmas isn’t just all about them and baby Jesus (it’s about me, too!)

Me: “I’ve got to just work, parent, and finish my book in 2025.”

Also me: “Sure, I’ll coach the boys again this winter.”

I only had to walk eight blocks from my Tacoma home for my latest Pacific NW Magazine/Seattle Times article!

My first longform feature for the Seattle Times is on the cover of today’s Pacific NW Magazine! It’s my account of a weekend spent at the Washington coast with a crew of fun-loving Seattle artists celebrating “Clamchella.”

Here’s the piece online: www.seattletimes.com/pacific-nw-m...

This morning my 7yo son attempted to draw a nativity scene with the people as animals and the animals as people because, he said, “that’s what a real artist would do.”

He’s not wrong, but his finished product was a hot mess.

"FIRES BURN AND sparks fly beneath the West Seattle Bridge in South Seattle. Ears ring with the metallic crashing of hammers into smoldering orange steel.“

—I wrote a fun article about Lawless Forge in today’s Seattle Times (in Pacific NW Magazine).

Participants are hesitant as they begin a blacksmithing class at Lawless Forge in Seattle, but confidence builds quickly through repetition and trial and error.

Are we doing #throwbackThursday on this app? If so, here’s a Seattle Times/Pacific NW Magazine piece I wrote last year about going sailing for the first time. ⛵️🌊🌅

The Flicka, a beautiful 35-foot sailboat with a busy crew, joins more than 30 other wind-powered vessels for a weekly race around Commencement Bay off Tacoma.

Reading two memoirs that are (in the chapters I’m on, at least) both set in Oregon. A weekend trip to Portland probably forthcoming. #books #amreading

Just turned in my first long form feature to the Seattle Times/Pacific NW Magazine. It’s light and fun — by no means hardhitting — but I really wrote the shit outta it and I’m excited to see it in print in about a month!
