you see this in superman redesigns too; i don't think it's actually exclusive to mecha. i think a good superman is a little cringe-looking by necessity, because he needs to be showing you that *he is not a threat in neutral stance*
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
i take a pretty dim view of being someone who fucks heavy with this type of thing as protagonist adjacent if you're over about 28 years old, because it feels intuitively like the worship of a thing "because it is powerful," not because of what that power is used for
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
unfortunately it does make a robot look very *powerful*, because it usually involves marrying both "real" and "super" signifiers *for power* and that is a thing that attracts a certain genre of model kit buyer.
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
giving something more entity stancing -- exaggerated toyish features, more faceness, etc. -- while also making it more visibly A Militarizable Object tensions the design in a way that isn't particularly, i think, "inviting"?
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
i think this is neat as hell because you can do it deliberately. however, you can also do it non-deliberately. i think this is why a lot of designs that feel "hype moments and aura-y" also kind of scan as evil if you actually like mecha
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
and again: the thing feels real fuckin bad to look at beyond the extent inherent in the "skull-ness" of it, because the design is moving in two directions at once.
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
the last boss, the mir orlen, fully flips the script. it has many "entity" parts -- teeth, "bones," a ribcage, lots of that fuel-line-as-organic-tissue language i mentioned with the zaku -- but *actively sheds* the one point of expression wanzers do have; the colors are all steel tones
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
and to get past gundam, you can take this and start porting it around. let's look at front mission 1. front mission 1 wanzers are distinctly tools. they behave as military hardware fully; the one point of humanized, "entity" expression is color
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
until, i think, the zeong. the zeong is piloted by char at his most humanized and it is the first thing where *most of its design language* moves in sync with the thing it is. it's alien, but i don't think we understand it as viscerally hostile in the way that we do the zaku
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
the fact that the design moves in both directions at the same time makes it instinctively feel evil, because *what it is conveying to you is in tension with itself*. it is deliberately not telling you what it is up to, visually, and the zeon MS continue this (gelgoog notably less on it than others)
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
the zaku has several features that are *more entity coded* than the Gundam -- more rounded edges, visible "hoses" (this type of winding shape codes a little organic -- think intestines, blood vessels, etc) -- but also several features that are less entity coded -- monoeye most obvious one here
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
we might be sad the GM exists but i don't think we're given to sense evil from the GM.

the same cannot be said of the zaku!
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
the GM is "the Gundam, but successfully made a tool." it sheds entity features (two eyes, one of the colors in its color scheme, most of the "toyish" weapons) in favor of tool ones.

HOWEVER, this is aligned with its purpose, so we don't feel tension about it.
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
when we start comparing other things to the gundam we start seeing the entity-tool distinction play out in varying ways.

let's break out the gm and the zaku as example cases
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
the gundam is an entity that people want to be a tool. much like amuro himself
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
consider the gundam; the gundam is an entity. people make a lot of hay about the gundam as the first Real but you need to stop thinking about what it defined. it is an expressing-thing; it *wants* to Defend Home but what it is called on to do is Make War
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
you are ascribing it some combination of "tool" (robot is hardware) and "entity" (robot either is an entity or projects entity traits)

this is fairly neutral in terms of real-super, or at least more so than you think
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
we need to talk about the tool-entity distinction in robot design and why certain robots exude evil that probably isn't intended (and in some cases why certain robots exude evil that probably is)

broadly: when you present a robot in a robot show and describe its role --
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
like this is the thing is despite my misogyny frustrations, which are my #1 issue and i feel like if i am not the one talking about them they will not get talked about in the contexts and with the specificity i have, i think i have an interesting analytical perspective
yurimobilefort.bsky.social
i should become more of a Poster
i am a person with generally good takes and if you can actually get me to post out of something other than despair i actually like a lot of things and do so at a high level

my golden rule for on deciding if a show with a male protagonist i'm looking at for Light Entertainment is simply not for me is if the brand of masculinity is so repulsive to me i can't even enjoy it on a woman. side characters like this are allowed to exist but i cannot be exposed to fans of them

I’ve said it before: this dynamic is part of why the attempted martial law in South Korea last year failed.

Soldiers didn’t want to fire on crowds of regular people breaking the President’s curfew.
bretdevereaux.bsky.social
This is correct, in part - as the grim, military historian in me feels the need to note - it is psychologically much harder to get soldiers to open fire on people they view as 'respectable.'

And I dread, with grim increasingly certainty, that we are headed to a point where that matters.

protests against this government should include white Boomer grandmothers who meet for pilates class, get a pitcher of mimosas & walk together to the public space

we need people in the street who think everyone can talk their way out of a speeding ticket, they're key to winning

In that, dreadful, terrible moment, every black bloc protestor in the world is useless, but a line of concerned senior citizens, office workers and house-spouses is actually a 'harder' target.

And 'the soldiers stood aside' is the sentence in the history book that goes before 'and the regime fell.'
