Photos and videos from nature, landscapes and of things that inspire me. Definitely not current but possibly timeless. P.s. I have a weakness for climbing.
The Onuma Quasi-National Park (大沼国定公園) on Hokkaidō offers picturesque lakes such as Lake Ōnuma (大沼), islands and the active volcano Mount Komagatake (駒ヶ岳). Taikobashi (太鼓橋), which means drum bridges, connect the many small islands.

The majestic Yōtei (羊蹄山), also known as "Ezo-Fuji" (蝦夷富士), rises above Lake Tōya (洞爺湖) on Hokkaido (北海道). This volcano is similar to Mount Fuji (富士山) and the lake is known for its never-freezing water.

The Tokyo Tower (333 m), Japan's tallest steel lattice tower in the Eiffel Tower style, glows orange and white to fulfil aviation regulations. There are 5 other towers in Japan, such as the Nagoya TV Tower in Sapporo or Nagoya.

The Tokyo Tower (東京タワー), which is reflected here, is still a popular tourist destination and a symbol of Tokyo (東京) at 333 metres. It was built in 1958 and serves as a viewing platform and radio tower.

Evening mood at Sakura Matsuri! shows an evening festival trail in Hirosaki. Colourful stalls with warm lights line the street while people stroll in a relaxed atmosphere. The contrast of the deep blue sky and lanterns creates a peaceful, festive mood.

In Maruyama Park (円山公園), the Yae-Zakura (八重桜) can be seen with its double cherry blossom. It is sterile, therefore hardly produces any fruit and offers neither pollen nor nectar. Still pretty and decorative, but no ecological interwining.

The governor's residence (五稜郭奉行所) in Hakodate was the scene of the Battle of Hakodate (箱館戦争, 1868-1869), the last clash of the Tokugawa shogunate. A symbol of the transition from samurai to the Meiji period, here during Hanami (花見).

A spring day at Ishizakijinushikai Shrine (石崎地主海神社, close to Hakodate): The delicate cherry blossoms (桜) envelop the street (道路) in a sea of pink, while a suitably coloured car (車) looks like a painting.

Hirosaki Castle (弘前城), built in 1611, is located in Hirosaki Park (弘前公園) with 2,600 cherry trees (桜の木). Famous for the cherry blossom festival (桜まつり) and "flower carpets" (花の絨毯) in the moats.

The Yamazakura (山桜), Japan's wild cherry, grows in mountainous regions such as Nikko. With delicate flowers and 5 petals, it differs from cultivated varieties which have double flowers due to terryphoria!

When crossing a torii (鳥居):
1. bow slightly (お辞儀, Ojigi) to show respect.
2. walk calmly and respectfully.
3. use the right or left edge of the path, as the centre belongs to the kami (神, God).

The legendary Fairy Bridge of Glen Creran. This was a bit tricky to find but not a long hike at all.

The Shinkyō (神橋) (built around 1636) marks the entrance to the sacred sites of #Nikko, #Japan and symbolises the connection between the world of the living and the gods. The red colour often marks sacred sites and is associated with happiness and joy!

In Nikko (日光) there is a small but very beautiful hiking trail through the countryside between Tōshōgu (東照宮) and Takinoo-Jinja (滝尾神社)!

Kitsune (狐 (fox) here at 滝尾神社) are often found at shrines (神社) and are considered sacred messengers of the rice god Inari (稲荷). They are protective spirits and symbolise fertility and prosperity. The red clothing symbolises protection (守護, shugo) & purity.

Bell rods, similar to those in Futarasan Shrine, are used by pilgrims to ask for protection (守護, shugo) when travelling. The suzu bells (鈴) drive away evil spirits (and bears 🐻), purify the path (清め, kiyome) and call on the kami (神) for guidance.

These stone lanterns (Tōrō, 灯籠) symbolise wisdom and the connection btw. heaven and earth. Meaning: base (基礎, Kiso) - earth, shaft (竿, Sao) - connection, light chamber (火袋, Hibukuro) -enlightenment, roof (笠, Kasa) - protection, crown (宝珠, Hōju) - heaven.

The Three Wise Monkeys (三猿, Sanzaru) at Tōshō-gū shrine stand for see, hear and say no evil (Mizaru, Kikazaru, Iwazaru). The wood carving teaches moral behaviour according to Confucian principles, especially for children, and symbolises purity and protection.

The gate seen here, the Yōmei-Mon (陽明門), shows Kirin (麒麟) (not Dragons) to symbolise peace, justice and the divine legitimacy of Tokugawa Ieyasu (徳川家康). The roof shingles end with the mitsuba-aoi (三つ葉葵), three daisy petals, the Tokugawa family crest.

The image shows the roofs of the Tōshō-gū Shrine (東照宮) in Nikko (日光), built in 1617 as the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu (徳川家康), founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The shrine reflects the grandeur of the Edo period (江戸時代).

A miko (巫女) walking past some kazaridaru (飾り樽). These barrels are often used as symbolic offerings in shrines and represent gratitude and prayers for a good harvest or protection. As a rule, they no longer contain sake, but are a ritual and aesthetic element.

One of the most impressive "lantern floats" that are carried through Aomori for the Nebuta Matsuri (ねぶた祭り) (early August). The festival attracts 3 million visitors every year and is a spectacle and an intangible UNESCO World Heritage Site.
