this applies to modern day movies in hollywood too. we dont get visual metaphors and symbolism without being explicitly told what it means because if the audience doesnt understand right away its "it got weird and confusing. i didnt like it."

context clues is fucking dead and many have lost the ability to read between the lines which is why many new authors have to spell out a character's feelings/motives and the lessons they want their readers to take away from their stories like they're 5.
