Thought I'd do a quick post about what (re)posts to expect from me:

- video games, mainly older ones
- reverse engineering, programming
- computers, mostly retro-related
- general anime, manga and vtubers
- "cute anime girls(/boys/others; mostly girls)"
- real life rambles, occasional politics

Restless at work for a bit, give me a game title that was announced but never came out from, let's say 1993-1999, and I'll dig into some of our unprocessed material to see if we can shed any new light on it.

Alt-text is often hailed as an accessibility aid and it is that but also I want to point out other benefits:

- mute filters work! your followers who have a term muted won't have to see an image you've properly alt-texted.

- alt text shows up in search so you can SEARCH YOUR IMAGE POSTS (HUGE)
Using alt text is a way to be kind that you can start doing right now.

It’s right there in your accessibility settings. Turn on require alt text before posting to help yourself remember (worth checking because this app sometimes flips it off for no reason).

Here's a quick look at the 'Video Boy' — a tool, made by Intelligent Systems, for viewing Virtual Boy games on a TV/monitor. Used to record video and screenshots.

It also used XBAND tech for online gaming, and had a card slot into which special cards could be inserted to pay to use the service alongside anything else Sega had planned that involved online payments.

But yeah, online connectivity is something Sega were always super keen on.

A neat bit of Sega Saturn and online gaming tech history in our copy of JPN Virtual On: an ad for the Sega Saturn Modem Kit.

This 14.4kbps modem went into the cartridge slot and connected to the wonderfully named 'Nifty-Serve', Japan's equivalent of Compuserve.

The big problem with this isn't that Bing is blocking them

The problem is that every search engine that's not Kagi, Google, or Yandex uses Bing as a backbone... so EVERY search engine is blocking them

Yahoo!, Duckduckgo, Ecosia, etc... all use Bing's dataset, and being cut off from Bing means PAIN
Bing has blocked neocities and all user subdomains from its search index.

We’ve spent months trying to resolve this through official channels and gotten nowhere.

Until this gets resolved, we are recommending that people do not use Bing.

I've got local mums asking me to sign petitions in support of this nonsense. It has nothing to do with protecting kids and everything to do with control and profit.

This game/film series apparently required players to download a new one minute chapter *every day for a year* and if you didn't beat the prior chapter you didn't get access to the next. They must have had five players by the end, at best.

I asked Megumi about this, and her best guess is that it's so unclear who would even own the rights to Virtual Lab anymore, that there's no established entity that Nintendo could negotiate with for it -- if they even wanted to include the game on the service in the first place. A shame for sure.
Saddened that the Virtual Boy collection does not include Virtual Lab, a puzzle game made by a trans woman who, in no uncertain terms, designed the on-screen character to have big breasts because she too wanted boobs, but couldn't afford top surgery.

I hope she's having a good day today.

now's maybe a good time to remember that duckduckgo is just a bing reskin rather than its own actual search engine

This isn't an "Australian-style ban", as bad as that was, it was at least targeted to specific, named large social media platforms
This is saying that under 16s may not use ANY online communication platform AT ALL. Not just social media. Messaging, chat, videos, streams, blogs, forums, anything
