This is happening in my district HS right now. English and history teachers were given an AI tool for students to practice writing, with the stated goal of increasing test scores. The AI gives feedback and grades the writing. My former students are devastated and want me to help.

FWIW, we have a journal article set for publication soon describing the process, takeaways, and recommendations. I’ll send a copy to our now former superintendent, and I’ll be sure to mention how upset the kids were to learn writing in HS only for test scores and not about craft

It’s all about scores. When AI writing instruction comes to the middle school, I’ll know it’s time to quit. I can’t teach writing like that: it’s wrong, it’s unethical, and it’s not who I am as an educator.

Our superintendent was adamant that our district does not teach to the test and that we value educating the whole child, not just the child as tester.

Then she goes and approves purchasing a subscription to that AI monstrosity.

I cannot abide a liar. It’s disingenuous at best

It’s especially pernicious because it comes on the heels of a year long research project that students and I did last year about machine scoring in state tests, and how that fosters the loss of voice and authenticity in writing.
