I'll never forgive Sylvia Garcia and Carol Alvarado for running ads supporting him. He's a bully with a big chip on his shoulder, which may account for the nervous tick he has when he speaks. Like a lot of Republicans whom he resembles, he lives in the past and governs like its 1988 instead of 2025.
And I'd like to live near the ocean adjacent to San Ysidro Road in Montecito. Meanwhile I'm stuck in a midrise apartment in the Montrose neighborhood in Houston.
Stewart McLaurin is a sorry excuse for a president of the White House Historical Association. His cloying demeanor would rationalize just about anything Trump would be doing.
It’s essentially a pre-Civil Rights era Southern social order where the rich whites rule. I live in Texas and this is the case now—reverting back to the old order thanks to the Supreme Court.
I guess it wasn't about "economic anxiety" after all. I would assert that the same mobs who burnt down Greenwood in Tulsa are the same ones who voted for 47. Likewise, the same mobs that staged a coup in Wilmington, NC in 1898 elected Trump. This was all aided and abetted by the Supreme Court.
I worked at Wells Fargo with a woman from Mexico who all of a sudden discovered her Jewish roots when the lesbian regional president was of the same faith. She leapfrogged over more qualified candidates for a manager position. Bari Weiss reminds me of that woman. Como se dice unscrupulous?
Roberts makes up things like the Major Questions Doctrine and Equal Sovereignty of the States to provide some sort of cover for SCOTUS' egregious decisions. Essentially they have an outcome in mind and come up with flimsy rationale to justify it.
This soon-to-be 71-year-old feels powerless in the face of institutional failure. Being a progressive in Texas now is to be absolutely excluded from the political process because of the excesses of state "leadership." The billionaires run the show now and the Supreme Court does their bidding.
To use an outdated expression, what's needed is the common touch. It's almost like code switching where the good retail politician uses terms that resonate with his or her constituency. Absolute ease with working class voters of all races is a must too.
For those of us absolutely dismayed by the state of the country, your article helps makes sense out of how we got here. "In Greek tragedy, hubris is excessive, dangerous pride . . . resulting in divine punishment and their tragic downfall."
Rural voters were so keen on punishing big cities and blue states that they were deliberately ignorant of the consequences of a new Trump administration. Their hatred of their perceived enemies blinded them to negative outcomes.
It's because of the goddamn Supreme Court. Every ill facing our country (guns, voting, money in politics, gerrymandering, 14th amendment disqualification) can be traced back to this benighted institution. Thanks for nothing both Bushes for nominating Thomas, Roberts and Alito. Pox on you McConnell.
Her little-girl voice gives me pause. I'd wager money that she's from one of Dallas's exurbs. If you worked with her, she'd be living in HR complaining about some slight or intolerence of Christians. I've worked with women like this in Texas and they're dangerous.
Thank you for writing this. Except for Sheldon Whitehouse I don't see many Democratic politicians calling out the Supreme Court. Zero in on specific people like Neil Gorsuch and the Chief "Justice." Brett Kavanaugh is so mediocre and feckless, it's hard to single him out.
If the Democrats ever regain a majority, how about legislation that restores the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act and adds a proviso that it's not subject to judicial review. That of course would require a no-snake majority in the Senate (I'm looking at you Kyrsten Sinema).
I'll never get over Kennedy v Bremerton School District where he falsely asserted the coach was engaging in a private act when the photos clearly demonstrate it was public and coercive to non-Christians. Although more abrasive, Gorsuch reminds me of Anthony Kennedy (Bush v Gore and Citizens United).
I can prepare a world-class meal at home using luxury ingredients for far less. Meal for two tomorrow: Fancy clam chowder, fettuccini with shrimp in Rao's Arrabbiata and for dessert Sara Lee cheesecake with blueberry compote for a total of $35.18. And, I'll have leftovers.
