Civil society remains indispensable: it drove the adoption of Resolution 1325, sustains its agenda, & continues to demand accountability and results.Without this pressure, the resolution risks losing substance. Defending the Women, Peace & Security Agenda is more urgent than ever #WomenPeaceSecurity
Many challenges remain for the WPS Agenda.
Laws haven’t transformed women’s lives in conflict.
Sexual violence continues with impunity, and participation in peace processes is still limited. To achieve sustainable peace, WPS must shift beyond securitisation to a truly feminist approach. #WPS
The Women, Peace & Security (WPS) agenda, born from UN Resolution 1325, recognises women as vital to preventing conflict and building peace.
But civil society, especially women’s organisations, remains underfunded. It’s time to shift resources from hard security to sustainable, people-powered peace.
Key Lessons continued: 25 YEARS OF #WPS
✔️ Sustained support for women peacebuilders keeps women’s rights central to diplomacy.
✔️ Women’s leadership — especially young women — is key to prevention, resolution & lasting peace.

Some key lessonS from 25 years of #WPS? ⚠️ Soft security matters. Progress under #UNSCR1325 risks being undermined by growing focus on hard security. ⚠️ Gendered disinformation is a real threat. Strong networks, online safety training & inclusion in National Action Plans are key.#WomenPlatformNI
As the world reflects on 25 years of the Women, Peace & Security agenda, and looks to the next decade, the message is clear: lasting peace depends on women’s leadership. When women lead, peace follows. 📷: © UN Photo/UN7742214 — General Assembly, Welcome to USA Ceremony, New York, 23 October 1946
2025 marks 25 years since the UN adopted the Women, Peace & Security agenda, recognising women’s essential roles in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, & recovery. The anniversary offers a chance to reflect on progress, confront persistent gaps, & push for more accountable action in the years ahead
When women lead, peace follows. We echo @unwomenchief Sima Bahous: this is no time for commemoration, it’s time to refocus, recommit & deliver on #WPS & #UNSCR1325.Gaza’s women face unimaginable suffering. We welcome @unitednations aid, but lasting peace demands women at the table .
As we reflect on UNSCR 1325, 4 key aspects of #WomenPeaceSecurity remain clear:
1️⃣ Women’s Role
2️⃣ Disproportionate Impact
3️⃣ Protection
4️⃣ Participation
✨ Friday RECAP: peace is stronger when women are at the table!

Adopted on 31 Oct 2000, UN Resolution 1325 recognised women’s vital role in preventing and resolving conflicts. It highlighted their contributions to peace talks, peacekeeping, humanitarian action, and recovery — and called for their full participation in all peace and security efforts. #WPS25
In Oct 2025, the UN marks 25 yrs of Resolution 1325, which launched the Women, Peace & Security agenda. The anniversary is both recognition of hard-won advocacy and a call for stronger global action to ensure women — especially those in conflict — are central to WPS. #UNSCR1325 #WomenPeaceSecurity
Women face the sharpest edge of conflict and climate crisis. In 2024, 676M lived near deadly conflict. By 2050, climate change could push 158M more into poverty—yet women remain sidelined in peace and climate planning. Read More: www.unwomen.org/en/articles/...
In 2024, 26.1% of women faced hunger vs 24.2% of men — that’s 64M more women. Women also spend 3 more years in poor health. By 2030, 1 in 3 women of reproductive age could live with anaemia..A society is only as strong as the health of its women.

10% of women still live in extreme poverty. Without urgent action, 351M could be trapped by 2030. Women shoulder unpaid care, are locked out of land, jobs & finance. Investing in women could cut poverty to 2.7% by 2050—the smartest, fastest growth strategy. #TheGenderSnapshot2025
The numbers don’t lie — The Gender Snapshot 2025 shows progress for women is under threat. Poverty, hunger, war, climate disasters & backlash against feminism are eroding gains that took a generation to win.
Equality is still possible — but only if we invest now.

The countdown to 2030 is on — & the clock is ticking.
2025 is a crossroads: deeper poverty and setbacks, or progress and equality.
The Gender Snapshot '25 shows both the cost of failure & the gains within reach.

Tech is reshaping how violence against women & girls plays out online. Misogyny, AI-fuelled disinfo & the “manosphere” are driving hate & harassment. We must act to protect rights & safety. (Full PDF Report in #linkinbio)

What safeguards human rights defenders internationally?
UDHR (1948): right to public life
ICCPR (1966): right to take part in public affairs
CEDAW (1979): right to equal, non-discriminatory participation
HRD Declaration (1998): right to defend rights individually & collectively #knowyourrights!
Violence, including sexual violence, is used to silence women human rights defenders and limit their participation. This targeting comes amid declining funding for women’s rights. 📷 Protest against Gender Based violence in Ecuador: UN Women/Johis Alarcón 📷
Why are women human rights defenders specifically targeted.
Like male activists, they face threats + restrictions. But women also face extra risks, rooted in stereotypes/ patriarchal ideas of “how women should act.” Defying these roles sparks hostility.#ProtectWomenDefenders #StandWithWomen #AllWomen

Threats to women human rights defenders are rising worldwide. Backlash & anti-rights movements fuel violence, threats & gendered hate. A strong feminist movement is more vital now than ever to drive change & end violence against women.#womensplatformni #humanrightsawareness
Implementing #GenderResponsiveBudgeting takes political will, strong institutions, solid data & accountability. It ensures fair resource distribution & drives #SDG5—empowering women & girls by 2030. #GenderEquality #SDGs
Designing gender-responsive budgets: UN Women calls on governments to recognise women’s diverse needs, engage across backgrounds, increase transparency to follow the money, mandate laws with clear tools, and analyse gender gaps to shape & monitor budgets. Read More: www.unwomen.org/en/articles/...
What are gender-responsive budgets?
They’re budgets designed to work for everyone by considering diverse needs.
Ignoring women’s needs can create biased policies with negative impacts.
Gender-responsive budgets promote fairness, accountability, and alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
