Ah! The bass violin - not a cello! Bigger than expected by modern eyes and sometimes tuned a whole tone lower. The 'Violoncello' (lit. little big violin) was the product of more sophisticated stringing allowing more flexible technique on a smaller instrument. Subtle difference in sound too!
