Wisconsin saw its first reported case of AIDS in 1982.

A decade later, there was still no rapid screening, no effective treatment, and no hope.

He was "too white," "too weird," "too gay." And his otherness was a problem for him -- everywhere.

Only four years after Stonewall, an 18-year-old woman took over her family business in downtown Wausau. Little did she know she was creating Wisconsin LGBTQ history.

Over 50 years later, The Pit (1973-1982) is still remembered as a groundbreaking regional destination.

We were thankful to be a finalist for the first-ever national grant supporting place-based LGBTQ history.
