Nice seeing our overdetection work used overseas @kirstenmccaffery.bsky.social @wiserhealthcare.bsky.social @sydneyhealthlitlab.bsky.social
OVERDETECTION EXAMPLE: Imagine a woman called Susan who develops a small, slow-growing breast cancer at age 75. The picture shows 2 possible scenarios that could happen to Susan... Susan's life span is the same, whether or not she has mammograms. So if she has mammograms, she experiences overdetection (a diagnosis and treatment she does not need).

Am I not understanding something or would screening itself be a potential explanation for the increase in cancer incidence in young people? Screening is meant to detect cancers after all so more opportunistic screening could mean more cancers. @wiserhealthcare.bsky.social ?

Some of the proposed reasons include diet and lifestyle factors, and even the gut microbiome. But ultimately we don’t know.
Bowel cancer rates are declining in people over 50. But why are they going up in younger adults?

Have you seen the TV show Apple Cider Vinegar where influencers promote wellness remedies to cure illnesses?

A global study by USYD's Dr Brooke Nickel found that influencers are promoting “overwhelmingly” misleading information about medical tests on socials.

#Screening2025 Next we hear about de-implementing screening where risk reduces (e.g. via HPV vaccination), and more on balancing benefits vs different types of harm (e.g. overdiagnosis, carbon emissions) from @wiserhealthcare.bsky.social epidemiologist @katyjlbell.bsky.social
