The Windows Sidebar, introduced in Windows Vista (2006), let users display so-called “gadgets” - objects showing live info such as news & weather - in a sidebar, or freely on the desktop. In Windows 7 (2009), the Sidebar was removed, with gadgets remaining until Windows 8 (2012).
