Aging queer millennial. Writer of A Labyrinth and If Any Gods Lived. Constantly anxious about everything but in a laughing awkwardly kind of way.

Make stories for Meow Wolf. Doing labor rights and trying to write a much as I can in the time I have.

Thanks to @jordanrothacker.bsky.social and Statorec for the great interview. Check it out at the link! I talk about my novel A Labyrinth and how Daedalus would have been a tech bro.

Interview with poet Michael J. Wilson on a long prose poem called “A Labyrinth" about the wild and hauntingly disturbing story of Pasiphaë and Daedalus.

Finishing the night with a Robert Altman I've not seen. Secret Honor (1984). Phillip Baker Hall is awesome in this. It's a one man movie. Just Baker Hall channeling Nixon for 90 minutes.

Currently watching Trouble in Mind (1985). The entire movie feels like it takes place in a proto Twin Peaks city scape. Divine, out of drag, plays a mafia boss.

Tech bros would rather talk about robot rights than human rights.

Seems bad!
‘Remigration’ is a term that comes out of the European far right. Its use by the DHS account is a sign of democratic and epistemic collapse

I think this is pretty accurate. The vast majority of people really only do what they believe to be "legal" and "acceptable". It's why you're saying an upshift in use of the r word again. Most people just do not think about morals in relation to everyday things.
I once saw a lecture where we were shown a video of 2 officers committing racist violence. Yet one of the officers was a Black woman.

The researcher’s finding were basically a 15 70 15 distribution. She told us 15% always try to do right, 15% always abuse power, 70% just follow the culture./1

Knitting at coffee shops as a middle aged person with a big old beard is interesting. People give you this "isn't that cute" look. And it 100% is.

Next I'm watching In The Mood For Love (2000). Probably one of the most beautiful films ever made. And the costumes! Just gorgeous.

I'm starting my annual Turkey Day movie fest with Blackout (1954).

Journalism is so broken that people sit on things until their neighbors are being dragged to camps and our health department has been fully destroyed in order to cinch a few hits on substack.

I don't even know what to say about this. It's just inhuman.
America’s most basic ability to treat and prevent HIV is in danger.

Decades of progress are being derailed by the Trump administration, public health experts say — and without reversing course, the damage will be devastating.

America’s most basic HIV protections are in danger as a decade of progress unravels
Health experts are alarmed as Republicans degrade the country’s pivotal HIV programs — and break promises made during Trump’s first term.

It is genuinely breaks me a bit when I think about it for more than a few seconds.
It's weird to not only have lived through an information revolution but also now living through its undoing, all within less than a generation.
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

Predator Badlands is a great example of the current moment. It expanded lore that didn't really need it. There was a cute creature that could be a toy that was only there for humor and was tonally off. There was an evil robot. And the action was filmed in a way that it was hard to follow.

We've never really dealt with how having the immediate gratification of computers / social media affects us, so the coming wave of AI-induced trauma will be hard to parse or handle.

If you like an author's work, the best thing you can do is buy it. The second best thing you can do is ask your local library to buy it. Or, do both!
A reminder that the median book deal for a debut author in the UK is £7000, paid over 12-18 months. (from 2022 Society of Authors report). Some of your favourite writers are struggling. societyofauthors.org/2022/12/06/a....

Abolishing ICE is only the beginning. Have you looked at your local cops?

..

According to mappingpoliceviolence.us, police kill at least three people per day; from a meta analysis published in NYT, we now know the number could be six or even more.

DOGE was created for data theft and infrastructure dismantling and it wildly succeeded on both counts within the first few weeks of its existence. It will take a generation to rebuild what it destroyed and the breach of data is unprecedented.
Bye bye, “DOGE”.

It no longer exists as a “centralized entity”, according to the Office of Personnel Management.
