Britain kept making rules the colonies didn’t agree to.

Colonists believed Parliament didn’t have the right to control their internal affairs—especially taxes.

This grievance says: we didn’t consent to this system.
Takeaway: Legitimacy comes from consent.

He has affected to render the Military independent of… the Civil Power.”

One of my favorite compliments: “My child didn’t even realize they were learning.” That’s the goal.

I write middle grade historical mysteries because kids deserve great stories, not watered-down lessons.

📜 Declaration Grievance #11

“He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies…”

Colonists didn’t trust permanent armies living among civilians.
To them it felt like intimidation, not protection.

Living through historic times feels romantic later—but inside the moment, it’s confusing and uncertain. Stories help kids understand that.

More officials, more enforcement, more pressure.

Britain added new government positions to enforce unpopular laws (like taxes and trade rules).

Colonists felt watched, managed, and drained financially.

Takeaway: Bureaucracy can become a weapon.

Deputy AG Todd Blanche, when explaining why some files were not included in the January 2026 release of 3 million files said that certain materials were withheld because they include “images depicting child pornography” and “images depicting death or abuse (bodily harm).”

Let that sink in.

If the King pays the judge… can the judge stay unbiased?
Colonists feared judges would rule in Britain’s favor to keep their salary and position.
That undermines trust in justice fast.

In 1774, printing the truth could get you arrested—or worse.
That’s where the kids of Seeds of Rebellion find themselves—inside a colonial print shop where courage was inked into every page.

Freedom wasn’t free. It was printed.
