This has always been their openly stated position. If only we in the West could have taken it seriously.

The whole point of holding power is that you use it to torment people. Otherwise it’s no fun.

Who can forget Trump saying that his assessment of the economy depended on how he was feeling on that particular day. That’s how it goes now. All very postmodern.

What kind of woke nonsense is that!?

Since it won’t be a war to advance democracy or human rights but rather will be about looting the country’s natural resources for private profit, Vance will probably say he’s fine with it. It’ll be a kind of extension of venture capitalism.

What’s more, this personal obsession seems to have displaced the normal priorities of our national defense policy.

Wasn't supposed to be about drug cartels or something?

Thanks.

Yes, though I’m not sure that specific issue was tested before the Supreme Court back then. The case revolved then around executive privilege.

The Wajda movie Katyn deserves to be more widely known. That’s the fate that’s in store for a conquered Ukraine.

In our brave new world following the law now counts as woke.

His age is the elephant in the room? You’ve got to be kidding. He doesn’t look a day over 35.

That’s the thing. He sees himself as a dictator, and believes (wrongly) that dictators don’t need to take account of public opinion.
November 24, 2025 at 5:11 PM
Yep. “Spreading democracy” today qualifies as woke. Now it’s about masculinity and mayhem for its own sake. Plus looting of course.

The real justification, one feels, is that Trump (with Hegseth cheering him on) just wants to start a war in order to prove to the world that he’s a tough guy. The change of name from Defense to War wasn’t just cosmetic. They want to see some blood flow.

Is nothing sacred?

No preparation of public opinion either. Has it been explained or defended on Fox?

He doesn’t care very much what the plan is or what the deal is so long as he gets the credit.

Goebbels and Goering still fighting each other in April 1945 …

Right. An intellectual position is one thing, the psychological needs it serves (and masks) are something else. A long chapter …

I always think of the judge in High Noon packing up the flag and getting out of town. Another “realist.”
November 24, 2025 at 2:33 PM
Just thinking that it would have been possible to make a similar “realist” case about Poland in 1939. Along the lines “A pity about the Poles but their hopes for independence just clash with geopolitical realities.”
November 24, 2025 at 1:42 PM
What about the “realists”? I’m not sure we’ve heard from Mearsheimer recently.
