The issue is that most genuine bigots are also highly unmoral with no consistent principles. Like, I know a dude who is very Catholic conservative but he's against Israel due to them killing children. This kind of conservative with somewhat strong ideas is considerably rare.
In a way, some conservatives live more connected to reality than liberals. They know the US has always been horrible but they think it rocks. Liberals are still believing in some fantasy America that has never existed.
