Museum: We welcome international visitors!

Also museum:

Guide: English only

If 40% of your visitors don't speak the local language, you're failing half your audience.

The tech exists. The barrier is institutional, not technical.

€399/month for unlimited multilingual guides that work instantly.

Modern museums could learn from that communal approach.
#WorldToiletDay so of course we need to talk #Roman toilets. Public latrines were social hives in Ancient Rome, where you could meet, gossip & do your business...& some business with fellow citizens. Watch this for an idea of what it was like! zurl.co/8OGV

walking out of the museum into afternoon light is like surfacing from underwater. my eyes hurt. I’ve been holding my breath.

three strangers who all stopped at the same painting and just… started talking about it.

love when museums put historical objects next to modern ones and suddenly you understand both better.

the museum security guard who’s been sitting next to the same Vermeer for 15 years probably has thoughts we should hear.

you ever notice how every museum bathroom is either:

designed by a Scandinavian minimalist

or

hasn’t been updated since 1973
no in between

I do love when museum audio guides sound like someone’s telling you a secret at a funeral.

This article presents some food for thought regarding museum technology. Curious to hear what some of our members who work in museums make of it...
We spent 20 years making phones central to museum visits. Apps, hashtags, scans, signups, beacons, selfies - now we wonder why visitors stare at screens instead of art.

I’ve written about what went wrong and how we can do better:

How We’re Building Museum #Technology That Gets Out of the Way.
The uncomfortable truth about museum technology: we’ve spent two decades making phones more essential to the museum experience while simultaneously making them more intrusive

QR code at the entrance, next to the artwork, or on a handout. Visitor scans, audio guide opens in their browser - automatically in their language. No signup, no app, no sharing details, no device checkout.

Just: scan, listen. walkietalk.ie

Write your guide once, translate to 32 languages with one click - text and audio generated automatically.

Already have recordings? Transcribe them first with one click, then translate.

Not perfect, few things are, but way way better than "English only, sorry."

Talked to a small museum yesterday. They were quoted €50K for a custom audio guide app. Then another €10K/year for updates. They have 20 staff members. This is why half the museums I visit have no audio guides at all. The pricing model is broken.

We propose €399/month. For everything. That's it.

We just added a live text-to-speech demo to the website. Type anything in any language, hit "Create speech," and hear it in 32 different languages. It's oddly satisfying.

We built Walkie Talkie after years working with places like Copenhagen Contemporary and Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. Learned what actually works vs. what looks good in a pitch deck. Turns out: simple, fast, and reliable beats fancy and complicated every time. 🏛️

Walkie Talkie runs on reliable, fast servers in Frankfurt, Germany that are not owned by big tech.

We chose EU hosting specifically because European privacy laws are stronger than US alternatives.

Building for museums has taught us that 'mobile-first' doesn't mean 'app-first.' Most visitors don't want another app cluttering their phone—they want instant access to deeper stories. Web browsers are the most universal platform we have.
