Enjoyed Alien Earth even more on my second watch. This is definitely not what I expected or wanted, and a few years ago I would have hated this. But with time and perspective, I appreciate it more when risks are taken, and these characters and their journey really grew on me.

Yeah. Alternate timelines are fine. Good even as they really allow creators to stretch their legs without constraints. More series should be willing to try it so long as they have interesting stories to tell.
