It's pretty great! Much of the time, each screen is a discrete challenge, and you can try it over and over without penalty. I'll admit I did tap out at the credits and didn't do the postgame levels, where you're required to learn what is basically speedrun movement tech to progress.

That dynamic of really difficult challenge combined with very generous checkpoints and instant retries is similar to how Celeste works, and I like it. Even as someone who's not really good at precision platformers I was able to eventually beat the game through persistence, despite it being Hard.

Finished a campaign of His Majesty the Worm, run by @magnolienne.bsky.social! It culminated in a betrayal by a party member, a hunt through the Hell Market, and a very anime final battle in an extradimensional void. I'll write up a post about my retrospective thoughts on the game soon.

Water 7 is the part that makes the entire series worthwhile. It comes at the perfect time after prior arcs have set up the characters and world, but before the series falls prey to certain vices later on. Also, focuses on Nico Robin, AKA the best character.

You're being too hard on yourself. You work diligently on a regular basis, don't beat yourself up over a few hours.

We need to fund a sociological study surveying tabletop player habits around conversational repair. Take thousands of hours of footage to compare stated preferences with actual practice. Publish a sociolinguistics paper and get crucified for low impact factor.

Yes, yes, "number go up dopamine", but my brain just doesn't respond very much to that kind of thing.

Special exception given to Disgaea, which has sillyhuge attack values and such as a self-conscious bit of theater, urging you to do ten billion damage in one hit because you can.

Friends don't let friends inflate numbers for the sake of having bigger numbers. It's a particular vice of video games (which don't require humans to do the math) but a tabletop example that comes to mind is Yu-Gi-Oh, in which every stat is multiplied by a 1000 just to look cool. Meaningless!

this table is so hilarious. the higher your level the more exp you need to level up, but also the exact same activities will give you more exp. making the number bigger for the sake of being bigger

What interview is this from? I'm so curious about the director coming around to a "Skynet was innocent" position.

I printed out maps, filled out character sheets, and clipped little part squares in preparation for a Protoplastic playtest last night, but when the time came one person couldn't make it, and another showed up late, so quorum was sadly not reached. Still played some Cairn, though.

As small of a thing as it might seem when you're doing it, even a single positive comment can convince a designer that they're not pouring out their soul into an unseen void.

If you enjoyed a game on Itch, leave a comment!

Honestly, it really brightens a creator's day. And it's a big encouragement for others who may be interested in getting that game.

Itch hides reviews from the game page, so I find comments more useful in the long run.

Like a game? Comment away!

Hence me starting earlier this year! I have made connections in the community since then, which has been encouraging. It just feels like more of an uphill battle now that I missed the heyday of TTRPG blogging.

I'm sad that I didn't start blogging sooner. I read RPG blogs copiously years ago, but I felt like I needed to have more complete things to show to get into that scene myself. I now realize that everyone else was doing stream-of-consciousness while working on things, and I could have done that too.

My reflexive response is that the GM should roll dice for the sake of simulative parity with the players, and because GMs should get to play a game and not just be an entertainer for the other people at the table. There is something to be said for the simplicity of not rolling, though.
