Today we celebrate the sex workers in our community with disability and/or chronic illness, and also recognise the barriers disabled sex workers face in our healthcare system. If you are a disabled and/or chronically ill sex worker, we want to hear your story. Go to linktr.ee/scarlet_alliance .

Sex work offers people living with disability and chronic illness flexible employment and autonomy.

Despite this, disabled and chronically ill sex workers are often made invisible by society, perpetuating stigma that disability is inherently unsexy and incompatible with sex work.

The Disabled Sex Workers Advisory Group (DSWAG) is composed of sex workers who are disabled and chronically ill.
The barriers to health services faced by disabled sex workers are multifaceted and deeply systemic. From a lack of free and anonymous sexual health services to limited access to sex worker-friendly GPs, mental health care, and allied health support, the healthcare system often fails to meet our needs.
DSWAG is currently collecting personal stories from disabled sex workers across unceded Australia. The survey aims to document stigma and discrimination in healthcare settings, and show why further advocacy is needed.

Sex worker voices must be a part of the conversation about gender based violence. We are a part of the community!

SEX WORK IS NOT AN ENABLER OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
Our job should not be a barrier to accessing sexual violence support.

Today is the International Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Anti-violence and gender equality work in Australia often positions pornography and sex work as key drivers of violence against women. But sex workers are part of the community. What happens when we experience gender based violence in our relationships or families, if services are set up to think we are the problem?

“Public stigma, lack of anti-discrimination protections and the criminalisation of sex work make us targets. Ex-partners who have gained my trust have used these factors to justify manipulation, shaming and violence against me.”
Katia Schwartz, Deaf Sex Worker and Advocate speaking on International Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women 2024.

Studies have shown a correlation between anti sex work attitudes and an increase in violence against sex workers, highlighting how damaging this narrative is.
Violence against sex workers is compounded by the attitudes we face when we dare to seek support and justice. Stigma from the family, sexual and domestic violence sector, health services, police, and “criminal justice systems” perpetuates the idea that violence is part of our job and we should expect it.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workers, migrant workers and those living with a disability are further marginalised when accessing support or justice.
