It was pretty awesome when physical items (instruction booklets, boxes) look like they were pulled straight from the game's world. It did a lot to immerse you even before you started to play.

Some games have literal keys. If you’re making a game in an urban environment, having literal locked doors and keys works. Not all games are as straight forward as that though, and there’s a lot of ways to hide a key.

Like most RPGs, Pokémon has a lot of menus. The funny thing is, there could be A LOT more. Pokémon cleverly hides it's menus inside the game’s world.

My favorite difficulty setting menu from a video game has to be from Keep Driving which simply asks what your relationship with your parents is between 1 and 5.
