I think that's another reason this quote about Van Gogh resonates with me so much and I think about it often. Art isn't so much about the skill in execution, but the heart and intention.

When Van Gogh was a young man in his early twenties, he was in London studying to be a clergyman. He had no thought of being an artist at all. he sat in his cheap little room writing a letter to his younger brother in Holland, whom he loved very much. He looked out his window at a watery twilight, a thin lampost, a star, and he said in his letter something like this: "it is so beautiful I must show you how it looks." And then on his cheap ruled note paper, he made the most beautiful, tender, little drawing of it.

When I read this letter of Van Gogh's it comforted me very much and seemed to throw a clear light light on on the whole road of Art Before, I thought that to produce a work of painting or literature, you scowled and

thought long and ponderously and weighed everything solemnly and learned everything that all artists had ever done aforetime, and what their influences and schools were, and you were extremely careful about *design* and *balance* and and getting *interesting planes* into your painting, and avoided, with the most astringent severity, showing the faintest *acedemical* tendency, and were strictly modern. And so on and so on.

But the moment I read Van Gogh's letter I knew what art was, and the creative impulse. It is a feeling of love and enthusiasm for something, and in a direct, simple, passionate and true way, you try to show this beauty in things to others, by drawing it.

And Van Gogh's little drawing on the cheap note paper was a work of art because he loved the sky and the frail lamppost against it so seriously that he made the drawing with the most exquisite conscientiousness and care. "

I just try to think of that old work like my "mark" on the world, and the expression of my ideas, feelings and love for the games & media I liked at that time, in that moment. The jokes and discussions shared between fandom friends from all over the world, many of whom have moved on to other things.

I don't know if I'll *always* commit to that... it gets harder with incremental improvement to look past all the flaws, and this illogical regret that I wasn't better at drawing back then to "do justice" to my ideas/the series I loved (especially watchdogs) so

I've tried to commit over the years to keeping all my old art up even when I've outgrown/no longer like it, because when I was younger it was a bummer when artists I admired wiped work I really love.

my old star wars new trilogy art is getting some reblogs again lately and on one hand I grimace at that but on the other hand I'm glad people are able to find joy in it still especially in these times

I think this was back from the d2 art events movie zine when I was thinking of doing the infamous john wick cover as my parody movie cover, and did a draw-over with uldren/crow. I don't remember why I decided to switch over to dr. strange instead. too much work maybe?

okay this one pains me... Astra's chibi trading card 😫
I think I just got burnt out of doing these at the time since they were all painted. I could go back and finish it any time!! It's just I felt like I wanted to modify her face design and I didn't have any ideas

possibly THE MOST annoying of my WIPs in WIP hell... a lesson learned in "please nail the pose before the face" and "f**k armour can't I just put him in a tight shirt and call it a day?!" and "full bodies are hell"

but I love him so I just keep coming back to poke at this every month
