I know from 90% of the actors I speak to that, if they were able to make a weekend pay off a major bill in their lives, they’d price their stuff lower. I am the same.

But rent has to be paid and, if we have to schedule time from our jobs, then we gotta make sure it’s still paid.

Talents who come in are taking time out of their schedules to appear for attendees at a private event (ticketed events are legally private events.) As such, it is a job for guests and must be treated as such with payment of some kind.
The way to pay them comes down to contracts.

It’s not to say that conventions are greedy. It’s quite the opposite 9 out of 10 times. A lot of conventions are not backed by big sponsors, but rather devoted fans who are building communities with what they can gather.

Not every convention can do multiple appearance fees.

A convention, in the past, would pay a flat appearance fee, which allowed cheaper/free stuff from guests. Now, conventions are more likely to cover guarantees instead; paying any negative differences from autograph sales. It costs less to bring them, but autographs go up.

When it comes to convention guest expectations of cost/prices, things have changed both in business and service on how guests come in to see attendees.

The economy and societal demands usually drive these changes, with 7/10 times in benefit of the con’s livelihood.
