Super happy to see the Halifax Explosion anniversary remembered by so many. But, the more important anniversary, in Canada, today, is the murder of 14 women at École Polytechnique, in Montréal. 13 were engineering students, one was an employee of the school. Femicide happens every day, still.

That's a biggie! Only 5km jbelow the surface, in Kluane Park. Assuming folks in Haines Junction got pretty rattled. Hoping nothing fell over/no one got hurt. Last time Whitehorse got one this big, we had another (bigger?) aftershock, within a few hours. earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...

And, we just had an earthquake! House was shaking, things in house rattling/swaying. Nothing fell. Off to check the earthquake tracking, to see details.

The other December 6 event happened in 1989: a mass shooting of young women who were students at École Polytechnique in Montréal. I had two good friends going to school in Montréal. At first, the news didn't say at WHICH school the shooting had taken place. theconversation.com/why-canada-n...

December 6th marks the day of two significant events in Canadian history. The older one happened in my town: The Halifax Explosion. It was the largest human-made detonation prior to the first atomic bomb. Link to online exhibit about the explosion: maritimemuseum.novascotia.ca/what-see-do/...

It has been snowing ALL DAY, without ever really getting light. Whitehorse now resembling the interior of a snow-globe. But, not, like, a PRETTY one. Mostly industrial, maybe a bit post-apocalyptic.

"Don't cut down a wildlife tree." "Helpful" advice from a YG Forester, for Yukoners wanting to cut their own X-mas tree, on CBC Radio. Bit vague. I imagine "Do NOT cut down a tree that has a bald eagle roosting on top." "Look (listen?) to avoid cutting down a tree that could contain a lynx 1/2

Makes me happy. Super wealthy people working TOGETHER, on a nation-building thing: ensuring that the HBC original charter remains in Canada, with a fund to make it available to FN and help with long-term preservation. Link to CBC online story about the Charter. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Feeling the dark days, W'tehorse peeps? Nature's winter pick-me-up, the American dipper, is baaack. Walk the M. Trail by the dam and listen. Cheerful, brave, fighty, ridiculous, soft-ball shaped brown birds diving into frigid, rushing water will make you feel better. Re-posting this bit of film 1/2

Now walk to work in full dark; walk home at dusk (full dusk soon). Whitehorse/Yukon drivers very unsafe for pedestrians. I wear a giant, reflective vest, like those worn by crossing-guards/daycare kids. Still have to watch myself/occasionally jump out of the path of cars: crosswalks/intersections.

First real night of winter cold, in many Yukon communities. Some places going down to -30C with wind, so risk of frostbite. Stay warm and be safe, friends.

A sad loss for my home province and for Canada. Journalists, take note: THIS is how you write the obituary of a famous woman (or any woman, really). Family, including the men in her life, are mentioned in the last sentence.
