It's obvious from his speech he was a soldier: he always had a tendency toward vulgarity, but his years in the Legions had him picking up not only the art of invective but a fair amount of military slang. He tries to avoid using that to forestall awkward conversations, but sometimes it slips out.

Ken's accent is heavily Doman: though he's conversationally fluent in Common, he's not really interested in shaking his homeland's inflections. His speech is usually rough, though like many Domans code-switching is something he's familiar with and you may occasionally catch him watcing his mouth.

She speaks politely and respectably,but usually informally. Her vocabulary is wider than might be expected, thanks to her love of poetry, but she sounds exactly the Shroudborn backwoods girl she is, unless she's making a conscious effort not to - usually when reciting, or dealing with nobility.

Ayah sounds as if she could be German, which she comes by courtesy of my headcanon that Gridania is "basically the Black Forest by way of Tolkien". Her Gridanian accent is light but noticeable; Thancred has almost given up on getting her to round out his name the way he thinks it ought to.

I had fun with this one, though character limits were not my friend. Both Ayah and Ken start out in Gridania, so I thought I'd set these snippets there. Pretty pleased with how these came out, actually!

Maybe I'll do something more with them some day. Maybe not. We'll see.

And Ken, stranger in a strange land.

He's small, dark, and unremarkable as a Yanxian sparrow. Which, here in Gridania, means you most likely look at him twice, just to make sure he really is as entirely misplaced as he seems. You don't get many Yanxian sparrows to the malm in the Twelveswood, and you don't see many like this lad either. What is he doing here? Everything about him fair screams outsider, from his olive skin to the embroidery on his coat to the way he casts about himself as he walks, as if he's searching the streets for something familiar to cling on to. His eyes are dark too, and wary with it. Even the polearm on his back, in this city of wiry-armed lancemen, seems alien and somehow suspect. All told he looks like trouble - or he's bringing trouble with him. One way or another, outsiders always do.

Ayah, straight off the carriage.

Ayah Mhakaracca.

She places the pen back on the register, and smooths a stray curl back from her freckled cheeks, and smiles. Smiles broad and yet somehow uncertain, like she's waiting to be told she's done it wrong. A neophyte's smile, ingratiating and apologetic all at the same time. But then everything about her is new: new pack, new tunic, new boots polished to a shine, with only the barest spattering of forest loam at the toes, all whispering to any who'll listen of the brave beginnings of adulthood. No, this one's tumbled straight off the carriage, though her voice marks her out as Shroudborn, and close enough to home her mother must hardly have had time to miss the ring of it. She might just as easily have gone to market, and been expected back for tea.

"So that's it, then?" she manages. "Just... signing the book? Do I not need to do aught else?"

Yes and yes: both Ayah and Ken are open books emotionally. Extremely easy to read and free with their feelings to the point that an onlooker, no matter how little they may know them personally, basically never needs to guess what they may be feeling and why.
