Photography on hiatus while my broken shoulder heals…
Mostly but not entirely urban. Mostly but not entirely nature. Mostly but not entirely birds—which are, of course, dinosaurs.
A raven and chick at St. John the Divine in Manhattan. (The second picture is a zoomed-in version of the first.)

At this time of year, Columbia University covers trees along College Walk, the main pathway across campus, with lights. They can be very pretty. This picture was at 2”, f/22, ISO 64, 25mm, plus some adjustments to contrast and exposure in post after converting to B&W.

I went to Riverside Park today to try to get a better picture of the dickcissel. No joy, but I saw four different kinds of woodpeckers (of the six types I've ever seen in Manhattan): a downy woodpecker, a hairy woodpecker, a red-bellied woodpecker, and a yellow-bellied sapsucker.

Looking for a better shot of the dickcissel in NYC’s Riverside Park, I tried using my long, I.e., heavy lens for the first time since my accident. Nope, too soon, and no dickcissel. But: a white-breasted nuthatch, a tufted titmouse, a red-bellied woodpecker, and—the prize—a peregrine falcon.

A Cooper's hawk on Morningside Drive in NYC. In Riverside Park, a Carolina wren and a black-capped chickadee, a downy woodpecker, and a tufted titmouse, a dicksissel, and the downy woodpecker. (I'd be skeptical of Merlin's ID as a dicksissel but one was known to be there.)

More winter birds in Central Park: a white-breasted nuthatch, a male and a female northern cardinal, and, watching over everything, a juvenile red-tailed hawk.

Typical NYC winter birds in Central Park today: a dark-eyed junco, a tufted titmouse, a bluejay that found an acorn, and a downy woodpecker.

How do I follow the list? (I don’t use Bluesky much; I mostly hang out on Mastodon.)

Sure.

The doctor said I could use my camera, to the extent I felt able to. So, after my first physical therapy appointment, I headed to Central Park…
So: a fox sparrow (a lifer!), a female purple finch (also a lifer!), my best-ever Carolina wren shot, and a white-breasted nuthatch.

A few bird pictures I could manage: a pair of common ravens on Morningside Drive just north of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine—the first time I’ve seen them since the chicks fledged—and a tufted titmouse in Central Park near the Pool.

My last pictures (October 20), on the outing to State Line Overlook where I fell and fractured my shoulder.…
A peregrine falcon (per Merlin), two black vultures, a red-bellied woodpecker, and some trees with nice autumn foliage.

I’ve neglected to post my eclipse pictures. They’re at www.urbandinosaurs.org/blog/2024-04....
Today’s walk in Central Park was good, too: www.urbandinosaurs.org/blog/2024-04....
