For many Australians, 26 January is a day of celebration. But for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, it can also be a day of mourning and loss. Today, and every day, we pay our respects to the Traditional Owners of the land on which we live and work.

We are deeply shocked and saddened by the horrific attack in Bondi last night. No child should feel unsafe because of who they are, their faith or their background.

Today’s ceasefire announcement is a fragile but vital glimmer of hope – for the children of Gaza, and for the hostages and their families in Israel.

Once in place, it must open the way for full humanitarian access and mark the first step on a long road toward recovery and peace.

No matter who they are or where they live, every child deserves peace.
