It was a combination of things. To people like my parents who’d grown up in working class ethnic enclaves in the city, the suburban dream of the ‘50s had a lot going for it beyond its lily whiteness. But the whites-only part sure in hell was a big selling point.

Huh. When I was growing up, CBS was one of the three national commercial television networks. I suppose there might have been people who regarded it as a “deep family tradition,” but those people would have been thought of as profoundly weird, and rightly so.

Brooke has been writing sternly worded letters to the publisher of his copy of the KJV about this every month for the past 17 years. The publisher’s office has an entire wall of those letters posted in the break room so the staff can have a good guffaw over the antics of “Thesaurus Guy.”
