“I will be proud to work with the union to fully fund our public schools, to ensure that every dollar we win — be it in City Hall or in Albany — for the purpose of education is actually going into our classrooms,” said @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social at our press conference on the UFT endorsement. 👏👏
The state’s new UFT-backed cellphone ban is getting rave reviews from educators who say students are more engaged in class — and rediscovering "old-fashioned" pastimes like reading, playing board games and simply talking to one another. Read: https://bit.ly/49mazI0

Paraprofessionals, tell us: what would you use the RESPECT check for?
We asked NYC paraprofessionals: What would the RESPECT check help you do?

“Buy food and pay for school.” “Help with rent.” “Keep my head above water.”

Paraprofessionals need the RESPECT check money — and we need the City Council to pass this bill.

Election Day is almost here — time to make your voice heard. NYC needs leaders who will support working people like us and who will fight for public schools, teachers, and students. That’s why it’s critical that UFT members get out to vote in this election.
This year, 60% of city classrooms have fewer students. The next step — building more classroom seats where needed — is going to take hard work, but Mamdani says he's ready to get it done.
UFT-endorsed candidate for mayor @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social knows how important the state's class size law is for both students and educators. He voted for it as an Assembly Member. Now he's pledged to help meet its targets as mayor.
We already have 48 of 51 Council members on our side — a veto-proof majority. But we must keep the pressure on so this bill reaches the mayor’s desk and becomes law.

Share this post widely and gear up for our day of action on Nov. 13. Together, we’ll win the RESPECT check paraprofessionals deserve!
2. The committee vote: Once the hearing ends, the committee will meet to vote the bill out of committee and send it to the full City Council.

3. The final City Council vote: When it’s on the agenda for the next stated meeting, every member will take a stand.
We’re closer than ever to winning the RESPECT check — but we can’t stop now.

Here’s how we’ll make it happen:

1. The Nov. 13 committee hearing: UFT President Mulgrew and our paraprofessionals will testify and make the case for why this bill must pass.
More than 154,000 NYC public school students experienced homelessness last year — nearly 1 in 7 students, per @afcnewyork.bsky.social.

They call it “tremendous obstacles.” We say it's a call to action: the city must do more so every child can learn, grow and thrive. https://bit.ly/4qcIUzc
Happy Diwali to those who celebrate! 🪔
Highly effective instructional practices require students to demonstrate an understanding of what constitutes high-quality work. But how do we create structures that position students not merely as recipients of evaluation standards, but as the architects of them? https://bit.ly/4n3Md93
