Behind “ethnic unity” slogans, the CCP is deepening controls on #Tibetans: restricting religion, language & culture under weiwen (“stability maintenance”). #Surveillance & coercion aim to erode Tibetan identity.

A newly proposed law in China would provide a broad legal framework to justify existing repression and force assimilation of minority populations in China and abroad.

This is a blatant effort to control people’s thoughts and expression about China.

Good to see these concerns about environmental damage done by fireworks in #Tibet; better still to also see it about mega-dams like #YarlungTsangpo, mines, roads, and other infrastructure projects causing serious harms.

My favourite film from TIFF was Kunsang Kyirong's ‘100 Sunset’, about a young, almost mute, Tibetan-Canadian woman who steals a camcorder to spy on people in her apartment building. It felt so fresh and full of energy and thrillingly unpredictable. You can read my FIPRESCI essay about it here:

Beijing is threatening to imprison student-activist Zhang Yadi for years for speaking out against racial injustice and peacefully exercising her rights. She should be starting graduate school in London, not jail. Governments should press for her freedom.

This is yet another story about authoritarianism — but one that hits a little different. Phurba is resilience incarnate, a person born for these times. And his tale is bonkers. I hope you enjoy reading it as much we did reporting it. Gift link: www.wsj.com/world/asia/t...

The Chinese artificial intelligence engine #DeepSeek often refuses to help programmers or gives them code with major security flaws when they say they are working for #Tibetans, or other communities considered sensitive by the Chinese government, new @crowdstrike.com research shows:
New research shows #DeepSeek suggests less-secure code when it is asked to help groups out of favor with the Chinese government. With its open-source model being adopted widely, this soft influence and hackability could spread. Gift link with email address etc. wapo.st/46jEZrb
