Vinyl reckoning: Herbie Hancock “The Piano” (CBS Japan), 1979. Solo piano. Half standards. Half originals. I prefer the originals, especially the moody “Sonrisa.” Reminds me of the one time I saw Hancock play acoustic. October 2001. John Patitucci on bass and Brian Blade on drums. #JazzSky
Yeah, a second-hand smoker.
Vinyl reckoning: Egberto Gismonti “Sol Do Meio Dia” (ECM/WB), 1978. Sunday morning vibes. Bought this about 20 years ago after hearing Ralph Towner’s “Waterwheel,” which I mistook for Gismonti. Oops. Took me a few listens to get over the fact that this is not “Batik.” #JazzSky

Made me smile to discover this. A little nugget. 😊

Just finished: “Roadside Picnic” by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky (MacMillan), 1977. Source material for Tarkovsky’s “Stalker,” this SF novel about the aftermath of an alien visitation has enough narrative-shifting and weird action that it rewards multiple readings (this was my second). #BookSky

Vinyl reckoning: Elephant9 with Terje Rypdal - “Catching Fire” (Rune Grammofon), 2024. Live double-album from these underrated jazz-rock bruisers—and this one has Norwegian guitar god Terje Rypdal along for the ride. 2017 concert. It’s almost as if I wished this into existence. #JazzSky #TerjeRypdal

Vinyl reckoning: Early Friday morning listening, @shaneparish.bsky.social “Repertoire” (Palilalia), 2024.
Caught Pita laptopping in a bar in Cleveland Park, DC. Must've been a few years before that Sunn O))) show. He is missed.

A legend in the village hall...
Now playing: John Abercrombie “Current Events” (ECM), 1986. Some peak-80s synth guitar in this jazz. Peter Erskine on drums and ‘mullet’ Marc Johnson on bass. It really does sound like they might bust out a cover of Steve Winwood’s “While You See A Chance.” #JazzSky
Now playing: Ches Smith “Clone Row” (Otherly Love), 2025. Glitch-jazz? Autechre-bop? Liberty Ellman and @maryhalvorson.bsky.social on guitars. Ches Smith on drums, vibes and electronics. Nick Dunston on bass and electronics. #Jazzsky

Some days here you need less coffee than others! I saw an iconic wig bobbing through the afternoon browsers and thought, could it be…..not just a jacked up yowler and shredder, Buzz is a hardcore bibliophile! And nice enough to pose by the old ball, outdoing the fiercest wigs that have been there
Now playing: Hound Dog Taylor and the HouseRockers “Natural Boogie” (Alligator), 1974. The punkest Chicago blues trio.
Now playing: Art Pepper “Intensity” (Contemporary), 1963. Beautiful mono quartet session from one of my favorite alto saxophonists. Pepper’s joined by pianist Dolo Coker, bassist Jimmy Bond, and drummer Frank Butler. #JazzSky
“You have to make the good out of the bad because that is all you have got to make it out of.” — Robert Penn Warren
Just finished: J.G. Ballard “Rushing to Paradise” (Picador), 1995. Still trying to sort this one out. An update of “Terminal Beach?” A story about the artificial nature of the sanctuary? “High Rise” on the beach? Whatever it is, Conrad’s lurking in there somewhere. #BookSky #Ballard
Now playing: Eberhard Weber “Later That Evening” (ECM/WB), 1982. I’ll buy almost any record with Bill Frisell on it. And I usually like Weber, so this seemed like a safe bet. Frisell is in impressionistic mode here, ceding a lot of space to the others. Moody. #JazzSky

www.theguardian.com/music/2025/s... danny wasn’t just wildly talented with one of the most recognisable double bass tones ever produced; he had a wonderfully disarming sense of humor, a dominant voice that loved sharing a good story of which he had countless. no airs, all round good fella. missed.
From Kate Bush to Pentangle to T-Rex, the late Danny Thompson’s musical brilliance knew no bounds
The bassist, who has died aged 86, was an extraordinary and wildly versatile presence in British music, bringing his personality into everything he played
