My Mass. grandparents only had to dial five numbers in the 1970s. Mémère & Pépère were 96911, Grammy & Grampy 96963 (2-5 numbering).

When they told someone outside the area their number, they stated not the first two letters, but the full "central office" name, Oriole 96911 or Orchard 96963
