Incredible rosecombing on these golden chanterelles. Rosecombing a naturally occurring ruffled cap deformity in chanterelles, an absolute nightmare to clean but oh so beautiful. #fungifriends #fungi #mushroom #chanterelle
A rare Pig’s ear (Gomphus clavatus) found on the Oregon coast this weekend #fungifriends #fungi #mushroommonday #mushroom
Seen last weekend in a coastal Pacific Northwest rainforest.
Wow! I spotted a Cluster cap, which is in a monotypic genus, meaning there’s just one species for the entire Connopus genus. So cool! (Connopus acervatus) #fungifriday #fungi #mushroom #fungifriends #taxonomy
It looks like a polypore, but it’s not. It’s a hydnoid fungus, so it has teeth not pores. You can see them if you zoom into the underside.
An elegant Spike cap basking in its glory. (Gomphidius sp.) #fungifriends #fungi #mushroom
They’re classified as inedible because they’re so bitter. The liquid didn’t have a taste but some say it’s peppery. 🤷🏼‍♂️
Glad you asked. I licked one this weekend.
EDIT: I got the genus wrong *Hydnellum peckii

Doing Latin from memory has its down sides 😬
Bitter bolete (Caloboletus sp.) spotted at Crater Lake National Park this weekend. #mushroommonday #fungifriends #mushroom
Winter chanterelles pinning on the southern Oregon coast (Craterellus tubaeformis). #fungifriends #fungi #mushroom #photography
That’s its veil still attached with gills underneath. The white spots on the cap are the biggest giveaway that this is an Amanita sp.
Definitely not S. Strobilaceus, confident it’s a species of Amanita. I suspect it’s a Western yellow-veiled Amanita (Amanita augusta).
