so: maybe support official releases for indie works. if you can’t, get that money directly to them via donation. for everything else, fuck it. enforcement of IP ranges from draconian (nintendo enslavement) to lax (anything AI is doing) and was written to favor the largest corporation

for works with multiple creators like films and videogames, it can feel like it’s better to just get official copies - but the truth is most labor done on those is already paid for; residuals go to only a select few, if anyone. most goes to the licensor. you can figure out the rest

if the creator holds the IP, piracy and redistribution is a dick move. many don’t, though. what matters at the end of the day is them getting paid for their work - so direct donation or sales of works they distribute personally is actually more likely to get that money to them

if piracy feels like a complex ethics issue to you, there’s a secret: the basis of US IP and copyright laws were written by and largely favor license holders, which are usually not the creators but their bosses/labels/distributors

“human art won’t go anywhere” was also a statement i saw frequently. it’s another technically-true statement that is being deployed in a rhetorical manner i don’t think works: telling people to shut up about their ethical concerns over the state of industry and creative labor
