Robert Redford died this week. He marked my youth! All the tributes are so well deserved. But why do so many of them fail to mention his great political movie, The Candidate (1972), where he plays an idealist running for Senate, who almost unwittingly ends up selling out.

Apologies: Arendt never said exactly this. She wrote some similar things, notably in “Truth and Politics”. But this is a jazzed up version. Is it AI generated? Or just someone’s creative poster-making?

“She wanted philosophy to begin with lived experience, and the aspect of lived experience that obsessed her from the start was otherness.” New online, Toril Moi on Simone de Beauvoir’s grammar of otherness:
Reciprocal Otherness: Simone de Beauvoir on freedom and difference
If we take a look at Simone de Beauvoir’s writing in the 1940s, we will find a series of different notions of otherness, enabling us to have more nuanced discussions of the concept.

A stellar series of reviews and, although I was relatively unmoved by Felski in 2015, an incredibly moving ending about why what Felski offers is significant and new (as opposed to the three analyses of crisis in question). Time to revisit her!

My review essay "Crisis in the Profession, or the Failure to Imagine the New"on recent books by Bruce Robbins, Jonathan Kramnick, and John Guillory is out in ALH! Also discusses Robbins and Guillory's treatment of Rita Felski.

Hvorfor? Fordi jeg er litteraturviter.

I am glad to see this quote from Hannah Arendt in many places these days. Worth thinking about!
