Sotomayor: "race is *always* a part of redistricting efforts."

Thank you. See, the Republicans are trying to gaslight people by suggesting they're for "no race in gerrymandering." That's just not true. Race is ALWAYS a factor when you're drawing a map.

Kagan: "It's not about intentional discrimination because Section 2 isn't about intentional discrimination, it's about effectual discrimination."

Again, this should be the winning argument. It won't be.

Kagan says that this is not a "Shelby County thing," because Section 5 was looking at the past, while Section 2 is asking is their discrimination "NOW."

Louisiana still says that there's nothing we should be allowed to do to fix Louisiana's racism.

Nelson has done well. I thought she sounded a little nervous at the top, but she settled into it and did the thing.

KBJ is putting in the Lord's work here also, for all the good it will do.

There's a fun little colliquay where Alito is flatly mischaracterizing what happened at the lower court and Nelson and now Sotomayor or trying to correct him. But Sam is resistant to facts that show he's wrong so, for the second time this morning, he's just ignoring the facts.

Roberts is saying that the court's own precedent from a couple of years ago, where it ruled that Alabama had to draw racial fair maps, doesn't apply to this (identical) case, essentially because the Alabama case was poorly argued.
It's a terrible argument, but the hill Roberts is gonna die on.

Kavanaugh looking to find the "end point" when the Court no longer has to worry about the intentional use of race to create black districts.
I'd say "WHEN WHITE FOLKS STOP INTENTIONALLY USING RACE TO DECREASE BLACK VOTING POWER" but he thinks white people doing that is cool.

Alito says that we can figure this out with math. Nelson agrees, gives Alito the math that defeats his point.

Alleged attempted rapist Brett Kavanaugh jumps in to essentially ask if Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act even still needs to be a thing.

Remember, according to the Republican Justices, it's okay to gerrymander for party advantage, not racial advantage. It's an unknowable distinction, but one that allows the Republicans to okay racist gerrymandering under the guise of political gerrymandering.

absolutely! Almost hard to recognize Picardo under the makeup and such but yes. I liked the subtle reveal that McNee was not actually a were. Just a human they entrusted into their fold

Recently watched the movie THE HOWLING for the first time. Very fun, and cool to see the total 80-ness of it. Had no idea The Howling led to 5 sequels! Also, the faces of police duo in the car (one young cop, one old) just maybe inspired Frank Miller's old/young cop scene in DKR #1 ...?

In high school, I went to the local coffee shop late at night and wrote. I dreamed of someday being a published novelist. In college, I wallpapered my bathroom with rejection letters from publishers. But I've always believed that if you really want something, you can do it. Eventually.

This was a fun panel — I recall covering tons of stuff that I’ve never discussed… pre-COPRA dreams and beefs and highs and lows. Glad it was recorded!

Annihilator by Josh Simmons. Great writing and art, fully realized settings, confident pacing, vibrant colors balancing its grim core.

Heavy duty cartooning, proving that a blood-soaked vigilante story doesn’t have to be boring, homogenous dogshit.

Nicely printed by Mansion Press.

Recommended.

Sunday reading:

I wrote about the aggrieved extremist who is currently firing thousands of federal workers and ravaging state capacity based on conspiratorial nonsense - and about mainstream media’s infuriating tendency to sanitize Russell Vought and the regime he serves.

This week’s piece:
We need to talk about Russell Vought – But Properly
Why certain mainstream outlets insist on sanitizing Vought as a devout “small government” conservative – and what actually animates his war against pluralistic democracy
