Hi everyone, my name is Tom Roussey & I’m a reporter for WJLA, the ABC station in the Washington, DC area. I focus on transportation – public transit like Metro, airports, bikes, roads – but I cover a bit of everything. Like most of us I’m new to Bluesky. I’ll post about news & my love of books too.
Second straight night of evening rush-hour traffic mayhem in DC related to road closures for the Zelenskyy visit
I don’t think they’ve confirmed that 100% but that certainly seems to be what it is.
Even for DC, traffic anywhere close Georgetown is absolutely horrific tonight, there was Secret Service activity & MPD said the Key Bridge would be closed throughout rush hour. My coworker & I finally abandoned the area completely and are heading north and way out of our way.
Avoid Georgetown and anywhere near it at all costs if you are driving! Per WTOP Secret Service apparently closed some roads and it is absolute chaos and I am stuck in it with my coworker 😬
VDOT says Beltway traffic like this, which is happening today and happens every afternoon as cars head towards Maryland, is why the Express Lanes are needed. However some in Prince George's County fear the project would send Virginia's traffic straight to them.
BREAKING: The Transportation Planning Board did not approve a Virginia plan to extend Express Lanes from Springfield to the National Harbor area. There was a lot of opposition from Prince George’s Co. TPB voted to allow VDOT to try again in the future but it has “work to do.”
There have been a lot of delays this holiday weekend at Reagan National Airport. Per the FAA they have been due not to the government shutdown, but the weather. Today is often a heavy travel day for travelers returning from long weekend trips, so this will affect a lot of people.
North of the RFK site where a new football stadium will be built, Metro might one day put a new station along the elevated tracks. That possibility will be explored as part of a study approved by the #wmata board today. Metro will also study possible upgrades at Stadium-Armory.
Per FlightAware Reagan National had 221 delays Wednesday (& zero cancellations) & 134 delays Tuesday. Wednesday the FAA reported an evening staffing shortage for air traffic control at DCA - it had an impact but did not lead to a meltdown. So far today no DCA shortage reported.
NEW: Video from the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority shows how the new Long Bridge for trains and a parallel bridge for pedestrians & bikers will be constructed over the Potomac River. Major construction work is expected to start next year, currently the projected completion date is 2030.
These slides from Metro show the reason for the planned Crystal City/Potomac Yard weekend shutdowns as well as the exact dates. #wmata
Also on 10 separate weekends between Feb & June (but not at peak cherry blossom time) Metro plans to shut down Crystal City, and on three of those weekends will also close Potomac Yard. Metro is working on a plan to make sure people can get to DCA during those weekends. #wmata
Metro says it'll shut down Bethesda, Medical Center & Grosvenor on the Red Line for 2 months next summer - July 6-Sept 6. #wmata says it'll be rehabbing Grosvenor's platform & doing bridge work, and it's building a mezzanine at Bethesda to connect to a future Purple Line station.
In the wake of January‘s deadly midair collision near Reagan National Airport, the FAA is looking at helicopter rules not just at DCA but nationwide. It recently announced rule changes at Dulles & BWI Marshall. #aviation wjla.com/news/local/n...

The National Park Service will consider widening the Mount Vernon Trail and adding better access to the Potomac River near the site of an old coal-fired power plant in Alexandria. www.nps.gov/gwmp/learn/n...
Reminder: Many Metro riders will need to leave extra time for their trips Saturday & Sunday as Rosslyn and Arlington Cemetery stations will be closed for track work, with buses replacing trains. Since three lines go through Rosslyn this will affect a lot of people. #wmata
No playoffs for the Nats means baseball season in DC ends Sunday, and on Monday Metro says it will close the Half Street entrance to the Navy Yard-Ballpark for about six months to install new escalators. The New Jersey Ave. entrance will stay open. #wmata
Metro leaders said today they do not plan to try to raise fares next year, however they will likely do so the following year.
They also said ridership is growing faster than expected, and that is helping their budget in the short term. #wmata
Construction will soon start on a new railroad bridge over the Potomac River that rail officials say will revolutionize commuter & passenger rail travel for the DC area & beyond. But there will be pain for riders as the new bridge is built. More details: wjla.com/news/local/l...

A portion of Connecticut Avenue just north of Dupont Circle is being "decked over" as part of a two-year project to build a new plaza in what is today just open air. I put a lot of details into this web article if you are interested in learning more: wjla.com/news/local/m...

This is the part of Connecticut Ave between Dupont Circle & Q St. that will be “decked over.“ DDOT says the plaza that will be built on top of the road will serve as a park, but also host events and be a place for outdoor dining.
