Hi everyone, my name is Tom Roussey & I’m a reporter for WJLA, the ABC station in the Washington, DC area. I focus on transportation – public transit like Metro, airports, bikes, roads – but I cover a bit of everything. Like most of us I’m new to Bluesky. I’ll post about news & my love of books too.
Winter weather here & elsewhere has caused a lot of delays, per FlightAware there have been 493 delays to or from Reagan National, 300 at Dulles, and 224 at BWI Marshall. While there have only been a small number of cancellations at IAD & BWI, there have been 120 at DCA!

It's possible winter weather will affect Metrobus service tomorrow morning. Metro says you can check whether your route is affected here: wmata.com/snow #wmata

Memorial near where two West Virginia National Guard members were shot grew a lot over the weekend. Many are coming to honor the memory of 20 yr old Sarah Beckstrom & pray for Andy Wolfe of Martinsburg, who the WV governor said today showed some positive signs by being responsive to a nurse.

Traffic headed to Reagan National Airport is backed up a half mile onto Rt. 1 - if you are traveling by car, I would plan on at least an extra hour, maybe more, just to get to the terminals. Taking Metro - even if you drop folks off 1 stop away from DCA - is a way to avoid this.

The number of flowers & American flags is growing outside the Farragut West Metro Station, where two members of the West Virginia National Guard were shot in an “ambush style” attack Wednesday.

Terrible news: President Trump says Sarah Beckstrom, one of the two West Virginia National Guard members shot yesterday in DC, has died. The other Guardsman, Andrew Wolfe of Martinsville, is still fighting for his life.

At a press conference this morning, US Attorney for DC Jeanine Pirro said the two West Virginia National Guard members shot yesterday have gone through surgery and are still in critical condition. She identified them as Andrew Wolfe & Sarah Beckstrom.

One of the two West Virginia National Guard members shot in DC today has been identified as Andrew Wolfe on the Facebook page of Berkeley County's Musselman High School, which says he is a graduate of the school. Musselman High is about 70 miles Northwest of DC.

Tuesday afternoon rush hour is almost always the absolute worst time to travel by road for Thanksgiving in the DC area, and the rain is making it even worse right now.
November 25, 2025 at 10:48 PM
Express Lane prices right now:
South on 395/95, DC to Fredericksburg: $86.75!!!
I-66 West, Beltway to Gainesville: $67.50
Beltway, Springfield to GW Pkwy: $32.65

Remember though, HOV–3 is free!! You need to set your E-ZPass Flex to HOV
November 25, 2025 at 9:32 PM
We are hitting the worst period for Thanksgiving travel in the DC area. A new section of Beltway Express Lanes is open between the Dulles Toll Road & GW Parkway. Right now it costs nearly $19 to go 2.5 miles if you’re driving north. It is free for HOV-3 however.

If you are hitting the road for Thanksgiving Tuesday, these are the worst times to travel by car.
November 25, 2025 at 4:47 AM
NEW: Because of the rain that is expected, the opening of the new 2.5 mile extension of the 495 Express Lanes in McLean will be delayed from 2 AM Saturday to 2 AM Sunday.

Ceremonial ribbon cutting happening this morning inside a Tysons hotel for the $660 million extension of the Beltway Express Lanes from near the Dulles Toll Road to the GW Pkwy. Weather permitting the lanes are expected to open tomorrow.

I asked Metro GM Randy Clarke if allowing riders to pay w/credit cards will reduce Metrobus fare evasion: "I definitely think it will help with that. Every way that we can make it easier to pay, the more likely people will pay.” #wmata Here's how fare evasion has grown with time:
November 18, 2025 at 9:48 PM
As of right now, for the first time all Metrobus riders can pay with a credit/debit card or phone/watch linked to a credit/debit card. Metro is holding an event launching “Tap. Ride. Go.” for bus. #wmata began allowing riders to pay for Metrorail with credit cards in May.

What a difference a week makes: FlightAware reports four cancellations at Dulles so far today and ZERO at DCA & BWI. Last Monday there were 96 at DCA alone, and dozens at the two other airports.

I missed the Smithsonian museums so much during the shutdown! Sometimes on Sunday afternoons I love to just go and learn about something for a while. Spent a few hours at the American History Museum today.
November 16, 2025 at 10:18 PM
JUST IN: The FAA will not force airlines to cancel more flights tomorrow as originally planned. Instead the FAA will freeze flight reduction levels at the current 6% level for 40 major airports including DCA, BWI & Dulles. It comes as the shutdown is expected to end tonight.
November 13, 2025 at 12:53 AM
With all the shutdown related flight delays & cancellations since last week, it's almost jarring to see the FAA reporting normal issues like this one in Buffalo.
November 12, 2025 at 9:03 PM
JUST IN: VDOT & Transurban have announced November 22 will be the day a new Express Lanes extension will open on the Beltway between the Dulles Toll Road & GW Parkway. The opening date is the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
November 10, 2025 at 9:20 PM
Things have improved a lot at DCA since yesterday & especially since Friday, however the airport has still seen more than 80 cancellations of arriving or departing flights today, which is more than double what both Dulles and BWI have seen so far.
November 10, 2025 at 8:39 PM
This is from FlightAware, showing that so far today Reagan National Airport has seen more cancellations than any other airport in the world. Staffing shortages have combined with new FAA restrictions that began today to cause an absolute mess.
