Next Fest 25|3 Day 0
Micro-reviews for Day 0 of Summer Next Fest 2025, exploring Sisyphus is a Bug, Finch & Archie, Cold Calling, DEG, Yunyun Syndrome!? Rhythm Psychosis, RESEED, Constance, Together: Moon Escape, and Temp...

A roguelike deckbuilder where your cards don't have energy, and are instead restricted by sigils you have to carefully arrange on the limited space of your moon. The mechanics are deep, and the visual aesthetic is phenomenally done. If you like deckbuilders I highly recommend you give it a go
Moonsigil Atlas on Steam
The deckbuilding roguelike with no energy – play cards using physical space! Slot cards together, manipulate the shape of your cards, and create overpowered combos to break the game!

I'm not sure why this game says it's a souls-like, because it's much more of a boss-rush kinda game, with single-digit numbers of enemies between bosses. It has an interesting gimmick where after each death your weapon disintegrates (in an agonizingly slow animation), and you get given a random one
The Bar Souls on Steam
The Bar Souls is a retro pixel souls-like set in a mysterious digital world. Face ruthless bosses, solve puzzles that test mind and heart, and let perseverance unveil hidden secrets on your path to th...

Swiftrace Canyon mixes racing and speedrunning, expecting you to both be fast, and to plot out your own path between markers in any order. The movement is surprisingly good, but I really hope they do a small fixer upper on the visuals, especially the very raw UI
Swiftrace Canyon on Steam
In this fast paced platformer you boost your way through canyons and caves, find shortcuts and race to the top of the leaderboards.

Moonlight Knight ('s demo) is visually a copy of Hollow Knight, down to the funky shape of grass. But that's where similarities end, because it's much more of a top-down hack'n'slash than anything else. So while visual creativity may have been low, and balancing is lacking, the demo wasn't that bad
Moonlight Knight on Steam
Moonlight Knight is an action-slasher with RPG elements. Use sword, bow, magic and hook to fight your enemies. Loot gold, upgrade character stats, find unique items and unlock ultimate abilities to ma...

Sometimes I want to look at something from the bigger budget zone, and this is a reimagining of the Painkiller that released over 20 years ago, as a Co-Op vs horde FPS. Looks like it might be a bit less grindy than Vermintide, though it releases soon so I suppose just wait for reviews and see
Pre-purchase Painkiller on Steam
The classic Painkiller series is back! Battle through Purgatory in fast-paced co-op action, wielding infernal weapons against relentless demonic hordes. Condemned for your sins, the Voice of the Creat...

Game With Balls caught my attention as being a rare case of a game designed specifically for a Steam Deck, utilizing its gyro-controls, across literally hand-crafted levels. I've had my friend test it, and the consensus is that it's more of a curio than an intriguing title
Game With Balls on Steam
Game With Balls! Move the Steam Deck to navigate through handcrafted mazes.

MineMogul is an automation game where instead of mining stuff on the surface, you go straight to the source and set up your machinery in the mines. If you ever played Hydroneer this shares a lot of the DNA in terms of moving physical ores, but without all the excavations and water pressure stuff
MineMogul on Steam
Design and build a factory deep underground in this physics-based automation sandbox. Mine resources, buy machines and master the chaos as you become the ultimate Mine Mogul!

And the final day of #NextFest is here! Bit earlier than usual due to personal commitments, but I've been grabbing extra reviews all week to ensure it's as filled with goodies as the rest. And it means you have all the more time to try them!

Highlights: Moonsigil Atlas, MineMogul, Swiftrace Canyon
Next Fest 25|3 Day 7
Micro-reviews for Day 7 of Autumn Next Fest 2025, exploring MineMogul, Game With Balls, Painkiller, Moonlight Knight, Swiftrace Canyon, The Bar Souls, and Moonsigil Atlas

Winter Burrow is a lot more chill than most other survival games, both literally and figuratively. While the hunger and cold are both a constant issue, they're hardly stressful, allowing you to do whatever you want at your own pace. Kinda as if Don't Starve was a lot friendlier to the player
Winter Burrow on Steam
Winter Burrow is a cozy woodland survival game about a mouse returning home to restore their childhood burrow. Explore, gather resources, craft, knit warm sweaters, bake pies and meet the locals.

Odd Town is an odd little sandbox. You're dropped into a small town and have to do odd jobs to earn money while joining a conspiracy that aims to figure out why people keep disappearing. There is humor and retro aesthetic, but it's lacking something to make it more than a series of fetch quests
Odd Town on Steam
Explore, eat, drink, and investigate in Odd Town — a first-person adventure where a picturesque small town hides something sinister beneath its charm.

Ricochet Abyss is a roguelike where numbers go brr, about ricocheting around the arena to deal with monsters. There are some fun ideas there with regards to buffs and item order, but there isn't all that much to this game other than numbers going brr. Just feels... hollow
Ricochet Abyss on Steam
Dive into Ricochet Abyss, a unique blend of tactical backpack management, hero-building, and pinball-style combat. Organize your inventory, equip powerful gear, and send your heroes ricocheting throug...

Nirih is all about falling fast. If you want to fall faster you have to go through stamina rings so that you can keep zooming, otherwise you'll limited to a boring old terminal velocity. Features some retro aesthetics, but sadly doesn't feature any of the planned boss battles
Nirih on Steam
Fly across worlds in pursuit of tainted souls that will corrupt the realms they inhabit. Boost your speed by following their trails and battling their creations, while dodging obstacles in your hunt.

Musical Maze is a half-baked idea at best, a waste of time at worst. Writing this micro-review is taking me more time than finishing the demo, and what little there is requires more polish, justification, and better audio design
Musical Maze on Steam
A relaxing escape game with moving walls. Escape from the maze by manipulating the platforms. Listen to the notes, take part in the symphony. Be careful, sometimes there are enemies who want to silenc...

Jackal is an extremely violent top-down shooter. Your goal is to paint the town red with the blood of anyone and everyone. There is definitely a great surreal aesthetic to it all, and your partner in crime is Anubis himself. I did struggle a bit with enemy spawns, but that's probably a skill issue
Jackal on Steam
Execute ultra-violent raids in 1970s casino hotels. Become a drug-fueled Vegas hitman that takes down the mob in unforgiving top-down close combat. Betray bosses, rob casinos and steal the dames

HAMSTERMIND is an archeological puzzler about rotating passages, freeing scarabs, and translating glyphs. It features a good variety of puzzle types and difficulties, both with plenty of gimmicks to keep things fresh. The solutions are never super challenging, but I did overthink a handful of them
HAMSTERMIND on Steam
Play as the legendary explorer Hamster Jones and explore a mysterious pyramid while solving the enigmas hidden within.

Confidential Killings seems to take inspiration from the Golden Idol series, but with a comic-book aesthetic and lower difficulty, at least in the demo. There are some places where the English translation feels off, which is definitely not good for a mystery game, but it's otherwise okay
Confidential Killings - A Detective Game on Steam
A series of murders is shocking Hollywood! Use your detective skills: search the crime scene, find clues, solve the mystery. Who is pulling the strings behind these Confidential Killings?

My #NextFest review marathon is coming to an end, and it's spiraling a bit out of control as I try some games that weren't all the best of quality. Thankfully it's usually not major problems, and there are still good demos to try

Highlights: Winter Burrow, HAMSTERMIND
Next Fest 25|3 Day 6
Micro-reviews for Day 6 of Autumn Next Fest 2025, exploring Confidential Killings, HAMSTERMIND, Jackal, Musical Maze, Nirih, Ricochet Abyss, Odd Town, and Winter Burrow

Typing Break requires you to type a weapon's name to shoot it. And you better type fast cause the enemies ain't waiting. As you progress through the waves you get more weapons and modifiers, allowing for your very own Lightning Flame Machinegun. My only complaint is the grind for the second class
Typing Break on Steam
If you can type, you can fire a gun.

Do You even Forklift? A physics-based game about moving things around with a forklift. Usually vehicles, and usually in perfectly reasonable and legal ways... usually. It's a good silly time, though sometimes the target detection felt a bit wonky
Do You even Forklift? on Steam
Silly, physics-based forklift game inspired by Ghibli and Japan car culture! Use your forklift skills in logic puzzles with many unexpected outcomes!

FlippUp is a very unique game that mixes pinball with rage games. You use the flippers to have your ball climb up a "pinball machine", and every now and again get stopped by actual pinball layouts. The aesthetic is lovely, even if the gameplay isn't for most people
FlippUp on Steam
You've activated an old Pinball machine—but with a twist. No points to score, just a mysterious mission to reach the top. We recommend you to try the demo before buying to avoid quick refunds- FlippTe...

Riddlewood Manor is a point'n'click filled with puzzles and tasteful jumpscares (not just a jpeg surprise). I expected this to be a trial and error of things until I find the ones that work, but was positively proven wrong. The game isn't really scary, but it's very halloweeny
Riddlewood Manor on Steam
Riddlewood Manor is a point & click adventure set in a haunted house that will try to kill you each step of your way. Overcome eerie logic puzzles to uncover a maze of mysterious rooms filled with...

ARROW WORLD is all about placing down belts to lead a box to its cargo/destination. A good game, but it has some design choices I find... odd. Time limit, controller-only gameplay, no undo key. Good, but odd
ARROW WORLD on Steam
Guide the ever-moving cardboard "Hakoby" to the goal! Use infinitely placeable conveyor belts to create diverse solutions. A fresh puzzle experience that responds to Hakoby in real-time!

Identifile's a roguelike where you are a cursor fighting malicious files. The combat is a bullet hell where you have to draw circles around enemies to deal damage, and the aesthetic is lovely. Runs may be a bit similar, but there is a lot of variety in items and cursors
Identifile: Desktop Dungeon on Steam
Something's deeply wrong with your PC and you’ve become the cursor. Navigate folders like dungeon rooms, delete viruses, and level up with EXEs in this action-packed roguelike.

MONUMENTUM is a platformer all about ascending an industrial monument using the momentum its machinery provides. You cannot jump, most of your momentum will come from fixtures of the facility you're climbing, launching you left right and center. And the sparse use of colors is a great aesthetic
MONUMENTUM on Steam
Take control of a small rolling square and utilize long dormant mechanisms to ascend to the top. Watch your step!

YAPYAP's a Co-Op game about going into a castle and vandalizing it with voice-activated spells. The voice spells - even if not perfect - worked surprisingly well, even with accents. There is some buggyness, and I'm disappointed to not have seen a fireball spell; but it was a good time with friends
YAPYAP on Steam
Online co-op horror game where up to 6 wizard minions go into an archmage’s tower. Use an assortment of spells to vandalize, break and steal - but beware the horrifying magical creatures that roam the...
