Some sketches sit on the floor of the artist Timmy Valentine’s studio. Washes of color have been applied to the sketches as they are prepared for painting.

Five faces have been sketched in a similar fashion. A woman’s face and shoulders. She looks towards the left of the canvas giving some serious side eye. Washed color and heavily applies pigment are the first layer of the painting process.

One of twelve paintings from a series created on 4x4 foot square panels this painting features shadows of rabbits in various poses painted in a shade that brings to mind inky blue. The rabbit in the center of the work is only partially painted in the blue and instead has an intense day glow pink color at his core. The watery greens of the background suggest an open field in daylight. Five teal hammers are scattered around the rabbits. The title of this piece is left in the rain to rust.

Two small study paintings from a larger body of work. These two paintings show that in my process I often use the same imagery and even sometime repeat the entire painting. Repeating things comforts me. I tend to follow that feeling while I am painting. The surface of each canvas pictured here shows signs of the artist’s process. Heavy layers surround sections of the canvas that are washed with color. The heavy build up of layers creates movement and texture. The application of layers of paint around the manzanita berries and branches creates the sense of shivering when studied closely. For me I see the rabbit as sort of a symbol for self. I’m always drawn back to it.
