You knew essentials by heart (home, gran, close friends, that one auntie), fave takeout, and some random extension.

Also, as a kid, there was a certain mystery to your Mom's address book, like an ancient script full of mythical coding.

The actual phone book was a brick, though, phew.

Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

There's wanting authors to engage with their readers, and there's offloading the services publishers used to offer to authors (e.g. solid editing) b/c reasons.

It's a difficult subject, to be sure, and the Arts as a whole are suffering atm, so there's that. It's an unpleasant situation all around 😟

Stories where, for 90+ minutes, you really do escape into another world and pick up a positive message on the way.
