Its real, Microsoft-given name was Clippit, but most rejected that name, and called the thing Clippy instead. It was so universally hated that MS gave up and stopped using it.

An amazing Honorary Unsubscribe this week. I spotted a VERY brief mention of the honoree, and it took a lot of digging to get the story. I was absolutely fascinated. The story is told in part with his own words.
