Admirable, she’d said, and that word sunk into his bones. Wriothesley's alpha was young, then, and confused, still coming into his own. He could not fathom that others did not feel the same way because they are his instincts, these are those ancient, hindbrain thoughts that fuel his waking moments.

As he grew older though, Wriothesley learned, he understood—his instincts were very different from others around him. Omegas were meant to be arm candy, to be quiet, and genteel. Rarely would they speak and never over their mate.

Wriothesley didn’t want that.

“Hydro Dragon Sovereign, huh,” Wriothesley says, coming to stop at Neuvillette’s side.

Centuries of pain cleave through Neuvillette all at once. For so long, he’s secreted his identity away, burying it beneath rumor and speculation, but now Wriothesley has uncovered the truth of him. Wriothesley has seen him, seen the ugly reality of him, a dragon born in the form of a man, in a body that has never fit quite right, a creature of water independent of the rule of the moon above. He doesn’t like this, doesn’t like to be seen, to be known, to have himself laid bare without his permission. Vulnerability is something he cannot countenance.

“So is… coming to the sea like coming home for you?”

A harmless enough question on the surface, but one that belies a destructive riptide beneath, yanking Neuvillette’s presence away from him and jettisoning it out beyond the wharfs and the harbors of the Court.

“No,” he manages, the word wheezing painfully from the tired remains of his waterlogged lungs.

Sometimes, Wriothesley goes away in his mind to dark and terrible places, places where screams are muffled by plush carpets and papered walls, or places where dank water carves slimy pathways down broken bricks, or places where mildew gathers on metallic pipes and his limbs scream in protest as he turns just one more gear.

He lingers in these places against his own will like he’s trapped in a nightmare where he can’t run despite the creatures chasing him, where his legs are leaden or chained to the floor, where he becomes a prisoner. Here, in these places, he cannot breathe.

He can’t help himself, can’t control these moments when he slips away from Neuvillette and finds himself drowning in memories he’d rather not relive. They are agonizing things, shackling him to a past he has denied and rejected: he isn’t that child, not anymore, not in name or body or belief, but the unconscious mind doesn’t care about his conscious desires or the person he’s made himself into.

“Wriothesley, there is an option. And you know what it is.”

Neuvillette mentioned it once, sharing his life with Wriothesley. Pulling at his power and gifting part of it to Wriothesley. It would mean changes, though. It would mean carrying the mark of a Sovereign, and bearing it for eternity.

Wriothesley worries the wedding ring around his finger and bites at his lip. “It’s—” Wriothesley pauses. “I’ve thought about bringing this up, you know.” A soft, incredulous chuckle flits from his lips. “Things have changed. We’ve changed. We’ve—”

Neuvillette stands abruptly, the chair clattering to the ground in his haste. He cups Wriothesley's cheeks, tilting him closer. “Beloved,” he says, “tell me that you want this. Tell me that you want forever with me.”

Neuvillette treats him not like a lover, but a partner. In moments like this, he leans close and whispers things like mate into Wriothesley's ear, and yes, yes, that’s what he wants.

And Wriothesley's thought about it, settling onto one knee between Neuvillette’s thighs. Private, like this. Fingers stroking over the smooth fabric of his trousers, nothing untoward, just a ground touch that would punctuate a fleeting statement: Marry me.

It wouldn’t be a question. Wriothesley wouldn’t need an answer because it’s already written in the small things that Neuvillette does, and that’s how Wriothesley knows just how real all of this is. Their love is deep like the ocean waters that Neuvillette commands, and it is bright like the moon that watches from above them.

Long nights with candles burning low, fingers brushing, the sharing of shy glances, the shuffle of papers, the scents of ink and tea. Then, the low murmur of their voices intertwining, the meeting of their lips, the sweet tangle of their bodies against soft silk sheets, the pounding of their hearts and the quickening of their breath, two becoming one.

You are mine, he wants to say, but it is already said. From Wriothesley, he feels the answering call, can practically see the upward curve of his lips in that characteristic smile.

“A walk,” says Neuvillette then, laughter curling through the air. “It was a poor excuse to find some time alone with you.”

“You could’ve scheduled a tea break—”

“I could have, but that wouldn’t have soothed you. Too many others around, too many alphas with their sour scents. Ever since…” Neuvillette trails off and changes the direction of his words. “I wanted you to myself. I always want you to myself.”

“Sweetheart—”

“Your rut,” continues Neuvillette, talking over him, “will come early. It will be before my next cycle, and I fear that it’s my fault.”
