'Kavanaugh pressed Nelson on whether the time has come to end the use of race-based districts under the Voting Rights Act, rather than “allowing it to extend forever.”'

Which is like suggesting that we don't need speed limits on roads because "most people don't speed anymore."
What (or who) on Earth were you baking in there????
The reason things don't get better is because we focus on the instances and miss the bigger causes.

So instead of fixing the *actual* problem, we get trapped endlessly fixing specific instances of the problem.

In a way, this is literally why people on left fail to create lasting change.
*checks the dictionary for the definition of "performative humility" and sees this quote...*
a basic fact: you need consumers to buy your products. Most consumers are workers. If you lay everyone off...

Who buys your goods?

That ended in 1929 and then ten years of the Depression and it took a world war to get things back on track.

I'd prefer not to do that again, thank you.
What makes genAI unique is the level of misrepresentation about its benefits the people who want to sell it are doing and the sheer disregard of history and common sense being shown.

We went through this in the 1920s. Automation led to massive job loss... and again, capitalists forgot...

Even the speed and intensity with which genAI is being pushed isn't unique (DotCom bubble anyone)?

The job/wage theft thing is also not new. Labour rights have been in decline in the US since the 50s. The US was founded on slave labour and wants that back.

As always, it's complicated.

Those elements of it are basically problems with western capitalism. People see a way to make money from it and so screw the consequence. I mean, climate change has the same cause. None of these are new or unique to genAI.

Basic rule of humanity: the people who yell the loudest against something their peer group thinks is bad (admittedly in this case, that's actually almost everyone) are the ones most likely to be doing it.

How many loudly anti-gay Republicans have been caught having gay sex, for example?
While I totally agree with you - it's also frightening in that I don't think Walgreens CAN stop ICE from entering their stores and doing this as they are federal "law" enforcement agents.

Mind you, Walgreens did support Dems over GOP 65/35... so... maybe they'll try?
Someone showed me a Sora of Stephen Hawking racing in an F1 competition using a hopped up wheelchair and it was the most disrespectful and somehow both disturbing and depressing video I've seen in quite some time.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Oh, and we had one customer who for some reason wanted to pay $2.50 of a $7.50 purchase in cash and the rest with a debit card... and then did the exact same thing again ten minutes later!

I did ring that one up (although it wasn't the only thing of his I wanted to wring...)
We're a private business. We don't have to accept ANY currency because we're not legally obligated to serve anyone as long as we're not refusing service for protected reasons (like race).

Being an idiot and expecting change for a hundred on $5 purchase is not a protected reason (yet, at least).
I'm really not going to take style advice from a guy in a fake Stetson (ok, or any Stetson)...

I grew up in the Canadian Texas and I have few positive memories of people who do that.
Giving you change wipes out half my float which means it will be harder give change to anyone else.

Also, having to handle your cash slows the line for everyone else. It's just amazingly inconsiderate.

We are NOT a bank.

Carry a mix of smaller bills or join us in 2025 and use your debit card.
Thought for the day:

If you're one of those people who refuse to use debit or credit cards but prefer to use cash, that's fine BUT...

If you walk into my shop with a $100 bill to pay for a $5 purchase, I will say no.

My entire float is $200 - mostly in coins.
Ugh. There's nothing worse than spending 10-15 mins trying to compress a complex idea into a post short enough for BSky...

And then after posting, realising you left out ONE WORD and that inverts the meaning of the entire post making it sound like you're saying the exact opposite of what you meant.
When it comes to things the GOP want but can't constitutionally have (banning abortions, preventing gender and racial equality, etc) they are staunch defenders of rights of States to rule themselves.

Unless the State wants something the GOP doesn't or is Dem. Then federal rule is best.

Trump’s regime is trying to blackmail colleges and universities to let him and his unqualified bureaucrats run our schools. We must demand that our universities commit to upholding freedom of speech and to providing an affordable, safe education for all. Take action to stop Trump’s “Loyalty Oath.” 👇

It's a direct violation of the Hatch Act.

Unfortunately, Trump will, as usual, take it to SCOTUS who will rubberstamp anything he asks for.

If we make it through this, it's clearly time for a review of how SCOTUS works. They're supposed to be the last line of defense AGAINST this sort of thing.
