Paper package has a light yellow ground with an orange band around the top edge and orange lettering that reads "PENGUIN/CIGARETTES" underneath an illustration of a penguin and iceberg on the front. Back of package printed with a white rectangular cigarette pack that reads "SPECIAL/QUALITY/CIGARETTES" along with 1934 copyright by Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. of Louisville, KY. One side printed with "20 CIGARETTES" opposite side printed with factory information and manufacturer notice. Bottom of package printed with Penguin brand name in orange. Blue paper tax stamp applied across top opening of package (torn open). Empty. The Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company was founded in 1894 in Winston-Salem by George T. Brown and his brother-in-law Robert Lynn Williamson. In 1924, they sold the business to London based British American Tobacco (which was a joint venture between the American Tobacco Company in the US and Imperial Tobacco Company in the UK). The business was then reorganized as the Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation and the Louisville, KY, factory was established.

Brown muslin tobacco pouch with a pink and white braided drawstring closure. Brown paper label applied around the exterior printed with black design featuring the silhouette of a horse in the center. Text on label reads "THE CELEBRATED/Brown Dick/Smoking Tobacco/JOHN W. CARROLL/LYNCHBURG, VA./JNO. W. CARROLL TOBACCO CO. SUCCESSOR/STOCK OWNED BY THE AMERICAN TOBACCO CO." Label also includes copyright and manufacturer notice. Brown paper closure tab torn open across the bag opening with handwritten date "9-17-12" on reverse. Empty. John W. Carroll started his tobacco company in Lynchburg during the 1870s eventually moving into the cigarette business and establishing the Lone Jack Tobacco Works. The American Tobacco Company bought out the stock and manufacturing rights for John W. Carroll Tobacco Co. in 1905.
