I think its meant to be more like a "light cruiser", but I'm positive it was sized to be about the biggest thing a adventuring party in an armed merchenter can expect to take on and win, and it carries about one adventures worth of bad guys.

Also, you cant tell in the image, but the scale of the ships is totally different. the mercenary cruiser is relatively small

Traveler comes first, by 7 years. Traveler is probably referencing an older novel with this design tho. (Space Viking, from 1962)

In the 60s spherical ships were common. perry rhodan has many. There are engineering advantages to a spherical hull.

Im not sure how visable it is, but her hair things are jet engines now!
