Survivors of high-control religion are often accused of being "brainwashed" when they question the group. This is a common tactic to instill self-doubt in the survivor and attempt to get them to remain in the group.
Boys were encouraged to enter politics (hence why debate teams are big in conservative homeschooling). Girls were told they must have as many children as possible, or risk being "outbred" by secular people or other religions. Not all Christianity, but it’s a reality in many fundamentalist circles.
Something people outside the religious right may not realize is that many apostates aren’t shocked, just horrified, by the political climate. They grew up hearing that their role as Christians was to "take back" the government and dismantle church-state separation. Here's how: (con)
Friendly reminder that deconstruction often brings a blend of joy and grief. It's completely normal to miss parts of your old life while embracing your new one. #religioustrauma
I will never understand parents who spew anti-trans rhetoric and then are surprised when their transgender adult child does not want a relationship with them
Exvangelicals, do you feel a ton of guilt and shame surrounding social media activism? If so, this video is for you. Let's discuss.

Canon event for emotional abuse survivors:
Googles "Am I a narcissist?"
*sees 15 pieces of evidence they aren't a narcissist*
*sees one clickbait article that says narcissists walk fast or some other random innocuous behavior*
"Yep, that's it, that's the proof, I am a narcissist"

Humans seek the familiar. It is no surprise that families with control issues and high-control religion often go hand in hand.
Very validating article by for folks who grew up in the Quiverfull and adjacent movements! Thanks @abbinye.bsky.social for sharing your experience.
"By treating children as cannon fodder, Quiverfull parents teach their children that God views them as expendable too."

Wow wow wow! All of this. Will never forget my mom telling me I had "no motherly instinct" when I didn't rush to soothe HER crying baby. It made me feel like there was something seriously wrong with me. Healed me would like to go back be like "Wait a sec, YOU'RE the mother here."

Started watching four episodes of vintage anime (Sailor Moon, Patlabor, Slayers, Gundam) every week with Discord friends and can't stress enough how watching fun stuff with online friends is a low-cost, low-effort way to help you feel better about shit. Can't recommend it enough.
Jokes aside, if this is you, this is something I see SO often in religious trauma therapy. Part of healing is getting in touch with the fun, playful, messy, and yes even immature parts of you! There is room for all of it. ✨️ #homeschoolrecovery
"You're so mature for your age."
"Thanks, I was the eldest daughter in a conservative homeschooling family."

Morning coffee thoughts: Stalking is still stalking, even when it’s a parent stalking their adult child. No one, regardless of their title or past relationship to you, has the right to invade your space or make you feel unsafe. #adultchildrenofemotionallyimmatureparents #religioustrauma
Hello, BlueSky! I was raised in the conservative Christian homeschooling movement (homeschooled preK-12), left when I was twenty, and am now a religious trauma therapist. I'm passionate about educating others on emotional abuse and manipulation: both prevention and recovery. #religioustrauma
Thank you! I'll be dropping Pt 2 and 3 tomorrow. :)
